Hi all. I was just wondering if anyone knows what the fastest CPU can be installed on a T61? Right now im running a T8100/800 FSB/ 3MB Cache. How big and how fast can the bios and motherboard support in a 800 FSB Socket P set up? And has anyone done the upgrade? (Of coarse after the warranty was up). Im not one for overclocking so that wouldn't interest me any. Just wondering. Thanks.

For most typical stuff like Office, Movies, Internet, Music, etc., they don't push the CPU enough to where you'd notice a difference. At this point a faster hard drive is probably money better spent if you've not done so already. Just my own personal opinion here, but upgrading the CPUs is almost never worth it from a performance perspective, especially within the same family of CPUs. You pay a large premium for a modest increase in performance. It's only a very few CPU intensive applications like Handbrake or crunching Access databases all day that will see much of an increase in performance. Even then it's not like the older CPU, the T8100 in your case, won't work, it'll just be a bit slower.

I've not done so on the T400 yet, but I just swapped the CPUs in my R60s yesterday. It took about 20 minutes. If you get stuck use the support and training videos. You can find a link in the sticky.

Oh i understand completely. I guess i was just curious on what the t61's maximum capabilities were as far as cpu's were concerned. What hdd do you recommend for max speed in the t61 keeping in mind that i would be staying with a sata drive and not a ssd drive. I read tons of benchmarks, and it gets a little confusing.

Best mechanical drive right now is the one in my 15" R60, the Seagate 7200.4. I'd guess you can go up to a T9500 CPU if you're so inclined.

Yeah.. You can go for T9500, but it's just not worth it. The extra few hundred bucks just isn't worth the extra bit of Mhz. I think the T9300 is the best bang for buck

Ok, great info. Thanks a lot. I'll start looking into it.
