    Hi,

    I own a thinkpad x61s. I've noticed that most times when the fan starts or stops, there is a noise with this action (almost like a gentle grinding sound). On spin up there is a sound, and on spin down there is a sound. There is no noise like this when the fan is running though. I was wondering, does anyone else experience this? What should I do?

    Sounds like the fan blade is touching some part of the fan frame.

    Not sure if you can take a close look at the fan and either see if it does indeed touch OR perhaps clean out the fan....which you should do at intervals anyway to reduce the heat.

    Also, I noticed this doesn't happen when I hold the thinkpad at different angles, it usually happens when the thinkpad is sitting normally.

    ::bump::

    Is this something worth calling lenovo over? I don't mind the noise if there is no actual problem with the hardware.

    If your system is not even and is sitting several centimeters off the table, then it is a manufacturer defect and Lenovo is responsible.

    I just sent the laptop in, received it back, and it seems like no changes were made, as i still keep getting the noise. It seems like they opened it up and didn't notice anything wrong. Should I do anything about this?
