I have receintly purchased a used IBM X30. I love the machine (it is very light) but the fan does not seem to be kicking in. I have had the machine on for hours, but it never kicks in. However, it starts during the boot up, so it is not broken, but that's it. Is this normal? How often does your fan kick in on X30 or a similar model? Finally, is there any software I could use to check on its health or improve the performance? if it turns out to be dead - how critical is this for the processor (and the hard disk, maybe)? Am I running a high risk of the system dying down on me? Thanks a lot!!!

Yeah you dont need a software. Start a demanding game. Run it for like 10 minutes and your fan will start at full speed.
My HP's fan barely runs unless I am gaming where it starts at top speed heh - I run demanding games.

First I would get Notebook Hardware Control (NHC) - google for it. It will monitor your harddrive and CPU temperature, you can control your fans with this software too. There is also speedfan which tells you about your fans, if they are running or not etc.

Thanks a lot!!! It helps! But jumping ahead - if the temperature gauge turns out dead, how critical will absence of fan will be for a Pentium 3, 800Mhz, and for the entire system?

If it turns out to be dead it is a problem, but depends if you are using your laptop for games then its critical. If you dont do heavy stuff like photoshop, and games then get it fixed.
But if you just do web surfing then its ok, but still either way I would get it fixed.

    p.s - add to my rep :).
