Hello,
the fan on hte backside of my laptop IBM R40 is not running.tell me what can i do bout it??i can still work on it.but after some time,the processor gets heated and i have to shut down for it to cool down.
please help me.

does it get so hot that it hurts to put on your lap? Does the bottom of your notebook hurt because it's so hot?
If so, then I'd e-mail IBM tech support or ask the retailer about it...
however, if you're just reading off of a program, but notice NO instability, I wouldn't worry about it -

How long have you owned your R40? I was just thinking if it's new to you and your use to using ohter notebooks you might not realize how quiet the R40 can be. Are you certain the fan does not work? if so are your sure it use to work? If it's less than a year old, just call IBM and they ill repalce it very quickly for you. If i't not under warranty any longer, open up the notebook and see if the power cable for the fan became disconnected. If all the connections look good, order a new fan from IBM and replace it yourself, I'm sure it's very easy to do.
