    Hi

I just bought a SL510 and noticed clearly the fan when it kicked in after 8 minuttes of use.

Running on battery a better power schema will give me a good 15minuttes before the fan kickes in.

I then searched the net for "fan noice" etc. and found quite a few post regarding this issue. Not just for the SL510 but also for W-models where most users talk about the fan beeing constanly on. Never realiszed if the W-users saw this as a problem. But also T410 users are posting about noice the the fan and fans beeing constantly on.

I have had many Thinkpads starting from T20. I have had most I think.
    These were perfect: T20, T21, T22
    Loose graphics chip! T40,T41
These worked fine to: T43, T61.

The latest Thinkpad I bought was a T61 and it reminds a lot of the SL510 in dimension, screen resolution and to some extend specs (shared video though). I have never had trouble with the fan. I watch movies too so of cause the fan has been going in he T61 but I have never thought about it. I guess this will say that the fan is pretty silent in the T61... in comparison to the SL510 and aparently T410 and other new Thinkpads.

    Now why is this?
Had Lenovo messed up on there new designs? Are new processors just way to power consuming?

I have replaced a desktop with a cheap Medion laptop. That machine will only make a sound under max. load when the fan hid higest speed. And it is a Core Duo with fine specs. So when Medion can make a silent Laptop I gues Lenove made some kind of mistake in there latest products, or?

Please give feedback on this subject.

As long as cooling is effective , i don't mind a little fan noise.
I found My T510 running at half the temperature as compared to Mackbook pro.
    My hp laptop runs at 70 -80, Macbook pro 60- 70, T510 30 - 45.
While T510 does make some fan noise but it' worth the noise.

My W701 hardly makes any noise it all, its up to now quietest laptop I've seen. In fact the fans are so quiet, I had to replace HDD for quieter one because HDD noise became a lot more noticeable and started to annoy me (you can find noise measurements in notebookcheck review).
The fan is always spinning, because it's hardly possible to keep 50W TDP quadcore cool even on idle using passive radiation. But I much prefer always but slow spinning fan to "off-on" pattern I've observed on Toshibas.

My HDD makes more noise than the fan. When the HDD goes idle then the laptop is completely silent.
