    Hi,

Four years ago, I bought a ThinkPad T61 because I wanted a very strong laptop that would last a long time. Right now, I have a problem with the fan and I must replace it. I have two questions. First, is it worthwhile? I think it is because I assume the laptop will work OK afterwards. Second, I've been thinking about buying another computer, perhaps a T420 or 520, but I don't know whether this makes sense. I mean, does it make sense to spend a lot of money on another ThinkPad and does it make sense to buy it now?

    Thanks and cheers.

How bad is the fan? You can get replacement fan and heatsink for the T61 on sites like eBay for not much these days but be sure it matches the exact T61 model you have. You can find out by matching the fan part number for the following T61's (there's 3 variants):

    14.1" Widescreen T61
    14.1" 4:3 T61
    15.4" T61

Thanks for your reply. I live in Argentina and I've contacted a couple of places for the replacement. As far as I can see, the fan will have to be replaced. In one of the places in question, they told me that the new fan for my T61 15.4'' will cost about U$150.

I'd try to clean the dust out with compressed air before replacing anything.

Yeah, well, I thought about it but I'm not sure I'd be able to do it and I don't have compressed air.

    Cheers

Use an airpump instead, one of these one uses to inflate a soccer ball with. I use a camping utensil which is originally destined to inflate an air mattress. Just be creative!

Regarding the 150$ fan offer, which most supposedly refers to the complete cooling unit, please just ignore it. Rather order a 30$ fan only replacement from some chinese eBay dealer, and replace the fan in your cooling unit, instead.

Another idea would be to get hold of a broken T61 with the same specs and use it as a replacement parts donor. That's the way i handle any issues with my machines.
