I am having difficulty with my external monitor and hopefully, someone on this forum can help. I am running Vista Ultimate 64 bit with Nvdia Quadro NVS 140m on a 14.1 inch IBM ThinkPad T61. The monitor connects fine and I can duplicate the image or make separate display out of the original laptop and the additional one. Or I can have laptop off and additional monitor on like the way I usually use it, but as soon as I close the lid on the laptop the screen flickers black in two seconds and the screen goes black, expect for a blue box in the middle which reads Out of Range H frequency 49.7 KHZ and V Frequency 60.0 Frequency. Does anyone know what this means? I also have the latest Nvdia software, driver updates, Windows Updates as well as Vista SP1 installed.
I have link to the screen which I am using below.

Thanks in advance for the help.

did you mess with the refresh rate on your external monitor? Thats what it is referring to. Go to Advanced under display settings and make sure that the refresh rate matches what your monitor is rated to display.
-
Try setting the external monitor as the default monitor in the nvidia settings.

Could you be more specific please. In the monitor display menue on the montior it says 65.2 and 59.9.
I then went to the desktop right clicked and ended up in display settings and changed the it to 60. Closed the lid and got the same error. Also my Monitor is set as the default display device.
I don't understand why closing the lid to the laptop would effect the monitors display as the laptops screen is off anyway.
under monitor settings I only have 59 or 60htz as an option.
Also when I start up the computer with the lid closed everything works great till I enter my password, or I gets to the password screen. Forgot the details. -
Your laptop is not going to sleep when you shut the lid is it?
-
nope not sleeping made sure of that

You need to set the output with the lenovo controls to Projector or presentation mode.
I think you have to press FN + F5 or something like that.
Your screen will dim, and a small screen will appear, and just select the presentation mode, and everything will be fine.
If this does not work, select the 1024x 768 resolution one, and that should work.

Its an Nvidia driver issue. Go to LaptopVideo2Go and download the latest driver from Nvidia with a modified INF. Or just uninstall all Nvidia driver and use the Windows default driver. Nvidia drivers dont play nice with some LCDs. When you close the LCD screen the notebook LCD turns off and thus it screws up the resolution of the external. I had a related problem before with an NEC LCD and my Gateway with a 7900GS. Another solution is to download some program to lock the resolution and refresh rate. I know a few that works for ATI but Im not sure about Nvidia.
p.s. As for Maplestory I think you can probably modify a config file to manually set the default resolution etc. The problem is the notebook is outputting a signal that is either too high in refresh rate or too large. When you start a game it changes resolution and goes into 3d which causes problems if your driver cant play nice with your LCD. -
thanks for the great tips. but i cant get my my monitor to turn on because the laptop monitor is broken and the external monitor just stays black even when i boot safe mode. its virtually un useable.

all fixed un-installed Nvdia from Program menu and then from Device Manager>Display. Then restarted and windows updated restarted installed new programs.
