I bought my X220 a few weeks ago, and I'm very happy with it. When I ordered it however, I (very stupidly) only chose the 1 yr on-site warranty (no accidental damage). Shortly after buying it, I chatted with a rep to see if I could fix my mistake and get the 3 yr on-site w/ accidental damage, but they can't do that (didn't hurt to try, right?)

My question is this: if I want to extend my warranty, does the price go up as my current warranty nears expiration?

I was able to extend my 3-yr Depot-only warranty on my T61 for another year w/ accidental/TPP. I would try calling again and see if you can get the extension.

The price for additional time might be higher. I don't know how much my warranty was initially on my T61 because I purchased it from my school, and it came with 3-yr Depot.

The warranty upgrade during the purchase is cheaper, as they tend to enjoy the same price discount (i.e. 15% off). However, you are able to extend the in-warranty system anytime prior to the warranty expiring. Although the TPP warranty needs to be done within 30 days of purchase (but web does say 90 days).

If your warranty expires you can get the post warranty maintenance agreement.

However, you must remember that during the life of your system you can only do 2 warranty upgrades to the maximum of 5 years.

My warranty expires July 2012 and I want to buy the 3yr basic warranty extension. When I contacted lenovo, I was told that if I buy the extension now, I will get three years from when I purchase the extension. Is this true? Or do I get 3yrs on top of the <1yr that I already have?

Also isn't the Onsite better then the Depot warrant? When I checked the price, I see this:
    3YR Onsite + 3YR ThinkPad Protection = $181.30
    3YR Depot + 3YR ThinkPad Protection = $219.00

I was able to get 2 yr depot + 2 yr TPP..it looks like since I got the on-site I wasn't supposed to be allowed to switch to a different kind of warranty (in this case the TPP). I begged the sales rep and offered to even pay more. Surprisingly enough, she was able to do the change and it came out cheaper than the 2 yr extension for onsite (almost $200 cheaper from $329 to $139). I can't express how happy I am with Lenovo support so far!

I probably won't miss on-site repairs since I'll always have my work computer anyway..c'est la vie!

if you ever need TPP then it has to occur at depot, as the technician has to do a bill of material quote for the repair and get ibm service approve it. The onsite technician can't do these quotes.

Warranties are from date of purchase - with the exception of out of warranty warranties.

ThinkPad with 1 yr warranty base -

Add 2 yr - 2 years total from purchase.
Add 3 yr - 3 years total from purchase.

Can someone explain to me why the 2yr onsite cost more than the 2yr depot, but the 3yr depot cost more than the 3yr onsite?

This is what I got from lenovo:

    2YR Depot + 2YR ThinkPad Protection............. $139.00
    2YR Onsite + 2YR ThinkPad Protection............ $159.00
    3YR Onsite + 3YR ThinkPad Protection............ $181.30
    3Yr Priority Onsite + 3Yr ThinkPad Protection... $202.30
    3YR Depot + 3YR ThinkPad Protection............. $219.00

Yeah, but why is the 3yr depot more than the 3yr onsite?
