Does Lenovo have a history of offering better sales at the end of financial quarters? Typically, the 2nd quarter 2q for companies in the US ends on March 31st, though I have no idea if Lenovo follows this.

I don't recall this being the case last year. I always thought their usual coupon system was pretty good...

You might find cheaper PCs at the end of the quarter in their outlet section. I think that was when my friend got his X61 last year.

I think you're grasping at straws here. Every notebook is going to sell for less at some point in the future, it's just a matter of when. I don't think there is any pattern as to when discounts are offered. They come when they come. About the best you can do it watch for a bit so you'll know when the price is relatively low. XPBargains is a good site for pricing history.

    I predict it will happen.

    This will happen because:

    A. By summer a huge amount of new technology will power Lenovo Thinkpads.
    B. The great technology that is in place right now must be sold soon to allow room for new technology.
    C. As the Olympics appproach Lenovo wants to build customer loyalty and increase new customer base.
    D. Everybody loves a good deal and as summer nears the sales will be hitting hard.
    E. A new GPU will empower the next generation Thinkpads. Must sale all old GPU tech.

Hmm, yeah, a lot of people have been predicting a T62 release along with Montevina. What would the new GPU be though? The nVidia Quadro FX 3600m just came out recently. It has a G92M core, 8800m-based. However, I wonder if Lenovo will put that in a 15.4" system or even a 14.1" system. With the exception of the one Alienware notebook, I think all 3600m and 8800m systems have been 17". I couldn't find any hard information on the power consumption Watts of the 3600m. However, the 8800m GTX takes up 37W.

Together with CPU's 35W it will turn 9-cell battery into a one hour UPS...
    ATi, are you there?!

The new Centrino 2 CPU will be more powerful and not use as much power.
Also as you mentioned IMO the new ATI GPU technology would be great in the new Thinkpads.

This is straying a bit from the original direction of the thread but I need to ask Centrino 2 - who needs it? What does a Centrino 2 do for most people? I believe that the C2D exceeds the needs of most people and at today's prices, why wait.

You know how people are, James. We're greedy. Always wanting more performance, more features, more AWESOME for our money. Many people have forgotten the days of buying with a purpose, instead of just for bragging rights. Of course, many of the improvements being made are great. I'm just speaking in very general terms.

That Centrino 2 box will not be had for $1100. Not for a while anyway.

It's good to have choices. :)

    I'm happy with my T61p.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the next generation of mobile Centrino 2's play out.

Yes, if anything happens, it probably should be over the weekend. (crosses fingers).

As for Montevina, T62, etc. it's a platform change that offers some significant upgrades. The CPUs will be somewhat faster and take up less battery. We'll probably see a move to DDR3, which should also suck up less battery. I'm especially curious to see what they'll do graphics card wise.

In the end, I'm debating to wait and like to speculate.

I cancelled my first order when I found out that I could save a few dollars using Visa. I have been wondering if there would be more incentives to buy as we get closer to Montevina so I have not re-ordered. When I went to the Lenovo site this morning I discovered that the DVD RW is now a free upgrade.

How low is Lenovo prepared to go? At these prices I see no problem with buying and then sending this box to Ebay when Nehalem comes.

Don't forget that after you order you have a 21 day window where you can request a pricematch one time. So your low price guarantee is good for 21 days from when you pay for it.

Their current sale doesn't end until April 7th. So if anything, it'll be after that. It's to believe that it can get even cheaper than this.
