    Hi everyone,

I've searched long and hard for a solution to this problem, and it appears that I have to disable the secondary IDE to allow suspend to work properly. I created an Ultimate Boot CD for Windows, and included the Thinkpad Configuration Package found here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-4ZFRG3

After I booted from the UBCD4WIN onto the Thinkpad X40, I installed extracted the configuration package to an attached USB stick. Even then, when I tried to run ps2.exe, it displays an error stating that the Thinkpad Configuration Package must be installed in order for the program to run. Looking at the extracted files, I don't see any obvious way for the program to get installed.

While I try to work around this problem, I'm considering dual booting the already installed Ubuntu with Windows XP merely so I can use standby. Are there any Thinkpad X40 specific guides out there that could help me along? I've read that the machine can get a get finicky since a USB CD-drive is needed to get it to work.

I realize that the information I'm asking for is super specific, and I'm just posting with the hope that someone out there may have overcome this exact problem that I've encountered with this particular Thinkpad. Anyone else who can give pointers will be very appreciated.

    Thanks guys!

I had suspend problems with my Dell using 8.10 and found that upgrading to 9.04 fixed that and other problems. Maybe you could do that first?...

The problem persists in 9.04, as cited here:
    http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg1422521.html

The same problem was encountered with FreeBSD, and it was solved with the ps2.exe utility, as explained here:
    file:///home/tszeng/Desktop/x40suspendsolution.html

I have a suspicion that if I merely use a live MS-DOS CD instead of a UBCD4WIN, the ps2.exe utility would run just fine. Time for me to do some more digging i guess.

Back to 9.04. I've heard that although it speeds up boot time by quite a bit, I've also read that some people who'd had working 8.10 installs encountered serious problems with 9.04. Since I'm new to 8.10 anyways, I think I'm going to try to first familiarize myself with 8.10, whose problems are well documented, before upgrading to an OS that doesn't have all its bugs completely documented.
