I'm coming from an 11 inch X301. Has served me well, just too slow to keep up with today's demands.
I've been looking at all the different models and seem to have narrowed it down to either of these 2:
X1 Yoga IPS WQHD, 8gb, 256gb sata3 w/integrated graphics 2.8 lbs
or
P40 Yoga IPS WQHD, 8gb, 256gb sata3 wtih Nvidia M500M GPU 3.9 lbs
The machines are exactly the same cost (1,763.10) in either of these configurations. There are 3 main differences:
1. Weight (X1 is over a pound lighter)
2. X1 has Intel Integrated graphics vs a full graphics GPU on the P40
3. The P40 is Milspec rated. I did very well with my x301 but Milspec is attractive to me.
The P40 is a little bulkier than the X1 and I'm sure with the GPU the battery life is a little less.
I typically carry my laptop in my work bag, set it up at job-sites, in the office and occasionally at home. Don't really watch movies on it, mostly for work, no video editing or artistic stuff.
The only real reason I'm considering the P40 is that the video scrolling on my x301 was so poor I'm very leery about buying something with under powered graphics.
On the flip side, I'm thinking at 2.8 lbs if the X1 is good with graphics in my typical work apps than there is a possibility I'd use it more in tablet mode because it's so light and includes the pen.
I'm leaning towards the X1, I just have to find one on display somewhere so I can see what the integrated graphics look like.

It would seem the graphics in the new generation of Intel chips are going to be way better than what came in the X301.
I know I'd go for the X1 since it is so light and the performance is good enough for me. -
I have had my P40 for a week now. I have not had a chance to put it through its paces. But from what I read of your needs, you won't get any benefit from the extra weight of the P40, unless you need the exercise.
The GPU is for compatibility with various demanding software packages - it does not necessarily give any speed advantage in day-to-day use.
How old is your X301? They came out in 2008. -

If you want new hardware, great, get new hardware. But I managed to get my 8-year-old desktop computer running pretty well by doing a (free) clean Win 10 install. Then I bought the P40.
