My only input source listed is the internal microphone -- I'm interested in recording streaming audio directly off my laptop using Audacity. I seem to be missing a device. Can someone suggest how I can address this? Thanks. [IMG][/IMG]

You have to take audio out and feed it to the recorder inputs.

Thanks for the reply but I have no idea what that means. Can you explain a tad more or point me to a more detailed explanation of the issue?

From what I can see, the primary issue is that the only recording device listed is the microphone, whereas the Audacity screen grab (on their Wiki) indicates that there should be other options for devices listed in the record tab of my audio settings panel besides just a microphone.

Are you talking about stereo mix capability? the only software solution for this, is something like the virtual audio cable software.

Virtual Audio Cable Home Page <-- this is the trial pack, you should have a try before you purchase the full version.

If the function is there on that machine, right-clicking on the window you show in your screenshot and ticking "show disabled devices" might work. If, like my cheapo G550, it is not there, one of the apps that provides this function will do it. VAC is mentioned above, I use Total Audio Recorder, and think I've tested on Win 7. A free app is available from Applian technologies, which I have used, but may have the usual provisos that come with free things.

This really ought to be flagged up by users returning machines and demanding refunds, as it makes the machines useless for many valid applications.

Thanks, billaboard -- you answered my question. No, the function is not there and I'm surprised because I would have thought the soundcard I got with my T400 would have had that. It doesn't. Lesson learned.
