How do you rate the materials used in the E460 / e560 compared to E440 / E540? In practical use, especially the coating on the back of the lid. Are very similar?
A colleague has E440. He treat the device like a baby. Unfortunately this soft-touch rubbered finish is terrible. Just after unboxing looks cool. But after a month of using it looks awful. This material is very easy to scratch (just fingernail accidentally). It is easy to be fingerprinted, but very difficult to clean.

True, but they do it because it's more grippy, so you're less likely to drop it.

Sure. But how often do you drop something accidentally? Especially something 500+$ expensive. Or heavy as t510. I'm sure that Lenovo could do better and do more practical.
I like Thinkpads for its design. I use T510 (my only complain is about cover finish) and R61 for years. Now it's time for replacement. I'm thinking about E460 (I prefer L/T series but too expensive). I'm curious about changes (if any) into materials. Unfortunately there is no E460/560 to see in local stores. I can make only some comparisons to E440 which is closest model.Last edited: Feb 8, 2016 -
If you donĀ“t like the rubbery finish, then maybe look at L460/L560. L-series is the successor-series to the old R-series, so they are like the great-great-great grandchild of your R61^^ As the R-series, their lids are not featuring the coating present on other ThinkPads.

Thanks for the tip. I bought L460 and I'm happy with it. The case still catches some fingerprits, at least is more pleasent to touch than rubberized T-series. But I have some issue with linux, but it is another story.
