I have been trying to get my laptop to Dual Boot and almost have it I think. I was able to finally get Dual Boot to work ( using EasyBCD ) last night. I booted into XP and then tried to boot into Vista and thats when the problem occured. It wanted to do a chkdsk .... I cancelled it and Vista booted up fine. I then went to reboot Vista again and thought that I would let chkdsk run. When it did it found problems ... corrected them ( dual boot files ) and now I can't boot into XP. This is the error message that I get.

Windows Boot Manager has experienced a problem.
    File: \ntldr
    Status: 0xc000000f
Info: The selected entry couldn't be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.

I have downloaded these 2 files to install but I need someone to please tell me where they should go.

    1)NTDETECT
    2)ntldr

    Thanks !

Thanks Arkit3kt, I have alreay been on that forum and have tried to follow the troubleshooting steps as much as I could. The steps just aren't basic enough for the beginner to figure out. ( Like your guide is ) ;)

After copying and pasting the 2 files into the C:\ directory this was the message that I got.

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

    <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.

Please re-install a copy of the above file"

Looking at the steps to correct I am a little uneasy about doing this. Can you explain what to do in basic terms please ?

    Thanks a million !

    Lee

Does the following article help any?:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314477

I'm not familiar with dual booting XP and Vista but I'll try to help as much as I can. Did you follow any specific guide? If so, which one did you follow?

A little ... but I am getting a little nervous about messing with files. ;)

I used this Dual Boot guide: http://apcmag.com/5485/dualbooting_vista_and_xp

FYI ... I have Vista installed on my C: drive and I have created a D: drive ( using DISKPART ) which I have successfully installed XP on.

On a side note ... in order for me to install XP I had to go into the BIOS and change the SATA setting to "compatiblity" and then once XP was installed I changed in back to AHCI. I also noticed that in Vista if I did not have it on AHCI then the Intel Turbo Memory was disabled .... weird I know ... but it was.

So ... at this point ... both OS's are installed but only Vista will boot.

Trying to give as much info as possible.

Thanks again for lending a hand !

I finished the guide completely and was able to get it to work.

Here is what I did step by step:

    1) After reinstalling the drivers for Vista to boot up I booted vista up and everything worked perfect.

    2) Next I rebooted and booted into XP everything worked perfect.

    3) I rebooted and went into Vista .. this time chkdsk attempted to run .. but I quickly cancelled it and Vista booted and worked fine.

    4) This is where it went bad ... I decided to reboot Vista and let chkdsk run .. it ran and found several errors ( startup errors I am assuming ) corrected them and boot Vista perfectly.

    5) Rebooted and tried to go into XP when I got the following message.

Windows Boot Manager has experienced a problem.
    File: \windows\system32\winload.exe
    Status: 0xc000000f
Info: The selected entry couldn't be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.

    6) I then downloaded and copied these 2 files into the C:\ directory and rebooted and tried XP again .. this time this was the message that I recieved.

The 2 files were: NTDETECT and ntldr

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

    <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.

Please re-install a copy of the above file"

And this is where I am at currently.

Oh .... and after I installed the 2 files it did something and I couldn't boot into Vista ... so I ended up using the install disk to do a system restore to get it running again.

I've read about 4 different guides on dual botting XP with Vista already installed and they all insist using that program so I think you're on the right track.
