seriously?
We don't know your specific situation...some background would be nice.... -

Dont buy either, invest money in a high yield CD.
Clearly, u dont need either one desperately now. So invest money and buy later -
Depends what your needs are.
-
I think I'm just going to keep the money.
-
Well that's an idea.
-
Can't you make drum noises with a notebook, you can't compute on a drumset.

Hardware cost is dropping, + money will grow in a CD -
Then you will be able to purchase more, maybe even both :|.

Although an notebook surely would have greater range and be more portable. Tough choice
Seriousely though.
A drumset will probably make you play more and thats generally not a bad thing. A notebook sure can be usefull but you can always get an notebook later on, if the lack of a drumset (or a notebook) makes you play less you might stop playing all together. And thats something thats much harder to just start again later.
But I'm just guessing here, don't know anything about you, I'd say you have to decide for yourself or seek advice IRL. -
well, its obvious! buy a T60 and Fxpansion BFD !!

a bit later, get a midi drumkit too. and a good soundcard.
Believe me, its the bomb! -
Go for the drumkit;
Pros
- You don't get dead pixels on a drumkit
- Even the T60 can't withstand two hours of being bashed by a stick
- You won't have to upgrade your drumkit after 2 years
- No BSOD on a drumkit
Cons
- You won't annoy the neighbours with a T60. Unless you piggyback onto their wifi -
Yea, a drumkit is nice to have, but...
Some day, youl'll want to record your druming, creating tunes...
Thats when BFD just can't be beaten, unless you have LOADS of money to afford the studiotime (not even to mention the countless drumkits that you can create with it).
Some of the epansion packs have > 100 velocity layers. Per dumhit. In multichannel, so you can add room-mic etc.. and no, thats not a dsp reverb, its the actual room it was recorded in.
A midi drumkit from Ebay and a copy of BFD would be my tip. Ah yea, and the T60. (Well, personally i would go for the X60 and a fast firewire drive, but thats just preference )
Besides the of course natural charme of a real kit that i cant deny, beeing able to play drums at 04.00am with headphones hast its uses too me thinks.
And the quality of BFD, O M G. Go ask the recording-pros, if you dont believe me.... -
Zack, are you the guy in the apartment next to me? I beg you, please don't get the drum set.

No Fred I'm more then a few hours away from NYC. I currently play a snare drum and am okay at it. I'm looking for something a little more interesting then just my snare. On the computer side my desktop is about 6 years old with an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (1.66 GHz), 512mb ram @ 100 MHz, and an NVIDIA GeForce 4 Ti 4200 (64 mb). This machine works fine for light stuff but anything "intesive" or with more then 5 windows slows it down much. I would also like the portablity of a laptop as I would use it for school.

That's a neat website. The sample is quite something.
Drumset or notebook?
