I received my X61s ealier this week. I removed the 512mb of RAM and installed 2 sticks of 1GB RAM. My computer runs much faster now. My only concern is that in Task Manager, there are over 80 processes running, and 1.2 of 2.0 GB of RAM is being used before I even do anything. I am not comfortable with reformatting and install XP Pro. Is there an alternative?. I just want to remove all the junk on my laptop and remove these processes. How do I go about doing this?. Any recommendations?. I really don't want to spend more money on RAM, I think 2GB is plenty for what I'm doing. I use my X61s for mainly web surfing and word processing.

    Thanks

You can start by going to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs, and delete those which you don't need. Then try Start ->Run, type msconfig ->Startup and uncheck unnecessary startup apps. While your in the neighborhood: Start ->Run, type services.msc and disable unwanted processes.

Run CCleaner to clean the leftover junk.

You can also read some guides on tweaking xp or vista here.

Theres also the programs tweak xp and the beta version of tweak vista that do more advanced tweaking after removing all the stuff you don't want.

I got my T61 last week and I'm in the same boat as you but I'm planning on going threw the hassle of reformatting since I want to recover the space from the hidden partitions. I also want to install linux so its best in my case just to format.

Main problem for me though is finding a vista disc...

Start with Add/Remove Programs bmwrob has mentioned.

There's a Lenovo program that lets you choose what you want to be installed by default. I'm not exactly sure if it formats your computer or just removes the selected programs for you. I forgot the name off the top of my head. Someone here knows what I'm talking about.

    -edit-
I found the name of the program. You can read more about it here:
