    Does your CD drive make a loud noise when you put a CD in it?

    Mine makes a very loud noise when I put a CD in it and it's reading it. Once it stops reading it, it doesn't make that much of a noise. Is yours loud as well?

    that's pretty common with all notebook drives. only slot loads are relatively quite cause there's no tray that vibrates

    Short answer: yes. Laptop drives are quite loud when they are spinning at full speed, and quiet down at lower speeds.

    Actually, you got it just in reverse - slot-load drives are typically much louder than conventional drives.

    You can adjust the acoustics of the CD/DVD drive in the BIOS or ThinkVantage Power Manager. There are three speed settings: High performance, Normal, and Silent. Pick Silent if you want your drive to be quiet but read and write slower.
