Does/will Lenovo provide a "downgrade" from Vista to XP?

Not necessarily a free one. I expect if I don't like the natively installed Vista to have to buy my own XP but I'm wondering if Lenovo gets enough complaints about Vista, will they sell XP as a replacement (or can you buy an XP disc from them now)?

Well... I'd assume if you called and requested XP you might be able to get XP installed on it, but I doubt it. I'm not sure if they'll sell you a copy of XP, either. I think it would be against their deal with Microsoft.

The only way to get XP, I believe, is to buy an OEM version from a provider.

Your probably right although I seem to remember Dell selling the "upgrade" from Windows XP "Home" to "Professional". My memory could be faulty here.

If you order by March 15, you can get XP on it while still getting the free Vista upgrade.

I've heard that the basic version of Vista is in fact just Win XPP repackaged. Without the vista "features".

Vista basic does not include Aero if that is what you are referring to.

How long will IBM offer XP as an option? I want to wait for the T60 14" widescreen, but that might be a month or two down the road, and XP might not be available any longer.

Is there an XP cutoff date?

I usually fully reformat my notebook drives after I buy a new one, but I don't want to do that with my first Thinkpad b/c of the recovery benefits provided by sticking with the backup partition.

You can burn discs to use for backup from the backup partition.

True, but if they're only shipping with Vista when I order, I won't have the IBM-approved XP recovery discs if I reformat and switch to my own copy of XP.
