I have an old Thinkpad T510, which is still in use. However, its 4GB memory is dead and I need to find replacement.

I am interested in this memory sold at eBay, but I am not 100% sure whether it will work on my laptop. Can any expert out there to tell me whether this memory will work on Thinkpad T510?

    Thanks!

It should work, but the T510 specifically is known to not just work with any ram even if it meet the required specs.

You should try to find reviews for the specific brand on amazon/newegg or similar, and find out whether other people have been successful with running it on a T510 (or even T410 since they should share the same chipset with almost the same BIOS)

Or, just try to find ram that are being sold specifically for T510.

I just ordered memory for my T410. I assume they use the same memory.

The only catch with the T410/T510 (assuming they use the same memory) is that they require low density modules. At least when it comes to 4GB sticks (I ordered 2 x 4GB recently myself).

Low density is also referred to as "2 Rank". 4GB sticks have 8 chips per side instead of 4. I've ran into this problem on various laptops with DDR1 and DDR2 memory over the last 14 years (only supporting low density memory when high density is most common).

They also need to be 1.5V instead of 1.35V. Any thing faster than 1066MHz or faster should be fine.

Update: Looking at the auction, those should work.

trueg, so this Adata set should work on T510?

I ask because when I bought mine, we tried several memory sets and the laptop declined all of them, so I stayed with the original set of 2x2gb isntead of 2x4 which I wanted.

By the way, the original set is also with 8 chips as your suggestion.

Maybe I try to think in some perspective, because if 1333 memory sticks work on T510 and at some point I decide to replace my T510 for T420 or T520 I can use it on the that new replacement.

Another problem is that is incredible hard to find 4GB 1066 memory sticks in Bulgaria. 1333 is more likely to be found.

That is a very good point, and you may also try to get 1600 memory, that support both 1.35v or 1.5v, in case you moved to haswell/broadwell

I think as long as it's low density/2 Rank/8 chips per side and 1.5V you should be fine. The speed shouldn't matter as long as it's at least 1066MHz.

Is there any way to recognize which rank is current memory bank? I suspect it is something like 8 chips per side = 2 rank, 4 chips per side = 1 rank. Am I right or its something else which I will look when I search memory banks, because from my expirience, most of the salesmen doesn't know what they offer and usually do not give full details about the products...

edit: I find a way how to recognize them. On the sticker of the memory bank is written something like:
1Rx4 which stands for 1 rank, four chips or 2Rx4 - 2 Rank - four chips.

So, I need to lookup for some memory bank which satisfy the following - 4GB 2Rx8 1333 1.5V
