And if so how simple is disabling it?

The Y580, like the vast majority of other W8 notebooks, does come with UEFI. I do believe it also has SecureBoot enabled, although I'm not 100% on that.
Are you planning on running Linux? -

Yes, I'll probably be running Ubuntu 12.10, which should support it. The issue is that I'd be compiling my own kernel, so I've got to figure out the key signing procedure I suppose.

This laptop has SecureBoot. It is as simple as loading into bios by pressing the novo button when the computer is off. The option to disable SecureBoot is not locked. What this machine has in the way of EUFI is laughable as far as what I thought EUFI was supposed to be. There is literally nothing interesting about it. I guess it has bios for legacy support with EUFI built on top of it. EUFI seemingly ends up to be nothing but a glorified recovery tool on this laptop.
