I've been planning on acquiring an x61s, but the one I'll be buying will only have 1GB of ram. To solve this I've been looking into buying an extra stick, but I've noticed that all x61s's seem to have a processor with an 800MHz FSB, but they all come with 667MHz ram.

I thought santa rosa supported 800MHz ram, or is that only later models in the line? I'm really confused...

btw, the model number is 7669-27G

No the X61 does not support that sort of ram. Santo rosa supports up to 667mhz ram so 800mhz ram will dowclock. The upcomming montevina platform will support 800mhz ram

the actual FSB (processor) can run up to 800Mhz depending on the processor

It is confusing! The processors have 800MHz FSB, but the Santa Rosa chipset supports up to only 667MHz DDR2 RAM.

The Processor's FSB is quadpumped meaning that the actual processor FSB is 200MHz (800MHz / 4), while the RAM is DDR2, meaning the RAM's actual speed is 333MHz (667 / 2).

In other words, even though the Santa Rosa platform only supports RAM with a clockspeed of 667MHz, the FSB is the bottleneck.

I see. I always thought that if the FSB was a certain clock, that the ram would always be the same clock. Thanks a bunch!

can you quickly tell us (me) what type of ram you are looking to purchase for x61s? Is is 200 pin 667mhz PC2-5300 DDR2? I found some that was lenovo Tseries specific, some said unbuffered (I think that works for our laptops)... not sure. Thank you!

You can almost always use the higher clock speed ram (in this case 6400 instead of 5300) it will just run at the slower speed.

on newegg I saw a lot of 2GB so-dimm PC2 6400 sticks, and considering that montineva isn't out yet I thought these were for santa rosa
