For no reason that is apparent to me, my T61p has just gone into a state of total paralysis. The mouse cursor works, but all I can see is the wallpaper -- no shortcuts, toolbars or anything else.

Does the T61P have a reset button?

When you hit alt-ctrl-del does the Task Manager show up?
If so click on the Processes tab and look for something called explorer.exe. An easy way to do this is click on the the Image Name category bar at the top so it will sort them alphabetically.
If it is there click it and then click End Process at the bottom right if it is isn't then continue to this step next as well.
Click on the Applications tab then at the bottom right click New Task...
In the box that comes up type explorer.exe.

I hope that helped, Im not sure if that works in Vista or not...

If that doesn't fix anything then you can always shut your computer off by holding down the power button until it just shuts off.

There is no response to ctrl-alt-delete.

I don't think it's registering anything from the keyboard.

Then I'd just hold down power till it shut off and restart it from there. If power does nothing you can always unplug it from the wall and take the battery out...

Yup, that is what I do, just hold the power button down. :)

    Thank you, Mark and natejosiah.

I unplugged the system, then held the power button and -- presto -- the computer shut down. When I rebooted, everything was fine.

Interestingly, I also called Lenovo technical support. Suspecting a virus, the lenovo rep wanted to do a complete reinstall to factory defaults, erasing all my data. I suggested your alternative. He reluctantly agreed. And of course it worked.

As you can no doubt tell, I'm just learning how to use this thing.
