I'm looking into buying a new T60 to replace my desktop computer, but one thing that has been bothering me is whether I'll still be able to keep my two monitor setup. I wouldn't mind using the T60 display as one of the monitors, but does anyone know whether you can set the external monitor port to be a separate desktop and not just mirror the built-in display?

From my understanding the ATI cards support this with no problem, however, I am not sure if the Intel GMA950 integrated video does.

At the very least with any of the cards you can get the dock that lets you put in a half height PCI card and do it that way.

Do you want 2 independed desktops or do you mean one desktop, stretched over two displays? (So you can put two (or more) windows side-by-side in their own display).

Ideally it would use the multiple display feature that is built into Windows XP. I know there are devices that change the output resolution to be twice as wide and split the signal between two monitors, but that would most likely cause problems with being able to maximize a window without it being stretched across two monitors. Usually I will have two separate applications open and maximized on different monitors as opposed to one really wide window over two monitors.

If you connect a second display to the VGA port on the T60 and have windows extend the desktop, it works fine.

I have a T60 with a 64MB dedicated ATI graphics card, and have been using it with a 19" widescreen display as a secondary monitor (awesome amount of work area :) ). With the ATI software, you can set up either screen as the primary (or any other configuration that you want), and it works great.

Unfortunately, I had terrible light leakage on my new external monitor, so I'm hunting for a new one.

I have read that the T60 (probably with ATI graphics) with the Advanced Mini Dock (maybe other docking options as well) supports two external monitors if you don't use the built-in display. For instance, you can have one monitor attached to the DVI port and another to the VGA port. Basically, I guess it will support two displays in a variety of configurations.

This is just what I heard and I sadly won't be able to confirm it until I get my T60 and Advanced Mini Dock. The current ship date is 1/8/2007, but hopefully I'll get it sooner and be able to report back. In the mean time, if someone else could prove or disprove this notion, please reply and let us know!

Did anyone confirm that this works? Does it matter if the 2 external monitors are WS or regular like the T60?

It does support two external displays. I have a T60 widescreen with the ATI x1400. On the dock are two 20" wide screens, one on the dvi the other on the VGA. The control panel from ATI allows you to assign any of the two as primary and secondary leaving one monitor off. In this case it would be the built in display.

I'd like confirmation that it works with the Intel 945 because I'd like to consider a z61, but I do not want ot give up the 20" setup.

You mean Intel GMA950? I believe it only support VGA. Try checking the TA book (first link in the sticky)
