Does the T400s / T410s have the same fancy surface coat as the X301?

I know that the X300 and the X301 came with a different exterior "coating" than the other Thinkpads. Does the T400s and T410s have this same coating? I know it has been very popular.

Does anyone know of a way of handling a laptop like the X301 / T400s / T410s without buying it? IE, Is there a retail store that sells them?

I assume you're referring to the X301's rubber-like texture on both the lid and the inside. The T400s and T410s both have the texture on the lids, as is traditional, but do not have it on the inside.

The Windows store in Scottsdale, AZ had both an X300 and a T400s -- if they open more of them they might carry them as well.

I have both an X300 and a T400s -- both the top and the palmrest of the X300 feel quite different than the T400s.

Correct, the T400s does not have the rubbery texture on the inside of the laptop. I guess it's one of those unique X300/X301 things :) To me, it shows fingerprints, and smudge marks MUCH more then the standard plastic on the other Thinkpad models.
Also, on the X301 the keyboard also has a different feel (almost like a rubbery feel as well across the keys) which is due to a texture they put across the keys on the X301, to keep the keys from getting "shiny" over time.
