If I buy the X60s for example, that has built in Verizon EVDO, would I be able to use it with an EVDO provider here in Canada such a Telus or Bell?

    thanks!

I would imagine so, but it would be best to contact the service provider you would like to work with and ask them about contract details.

I would imagine not. Just like the cell phone you buy from Verizon won't work on Sprint's network.

but the carriers are differently named in Canada, for example, Cingular does not exist (or is very localized), and the Cingular phones from the US register as being on the Rogers network. I don't remember what carrier in Canada picks up Verizon phones, but they work fine. So unless EVDO is different somehow, I would expect it works.

I could have sworn I saw somewhere that they are not compatible on other networks, but I could be wrong.

Unless you will be able to somehow get the subsidy lock number from Verizon, you can't use it on other carriers.

There are two barriers. First, EV-DO is only one of the 3G data technologies used by carriers, so EV-DO products will only work with networks using this technology. Even within the same 3G data standard, carriers frequently lock their phones/data cards to their network, so they can't be used with others. However if you insist to the carrier to unlock the product you've purchased, they may grant your wish.

Not really sure, but if any of the carriers in Canada support EV-DO it probably would be Telus. I'm from New York and have been with Verizon for a number of years and I also travel to Canada a lot.

Telus seems to be the Canadian provider most similar to Verizon in terms of phones they carry as well as the technology they use.

Not really sure about it though, you should call around just to be sure.

it will not likely work. just because its evdo doesn't mean you can use it on other carrier's network. both sprint and verizonwireless have evdo, but you can't use one on the other's and vice versa.

Anecdotal story here. First of all, no it will not work as you are tied to Verizon if you purchase the X60s with built-in EVDO.

I took a Verizon EVDO integrated notebook up to the Northwest U.S. last year, I was using it in Seattle for awhile and worked great. Then I went up to Canada for a couple of days and was thrilled to find that it worked in Vancouver, heck, I was driving down the highway (as a passenger) while booking tickets for the BC ferry to Victoria using the EVDO. I thought it was great, until I got a $100 roaming surcharge for all the data I used. It was on the Rogers wireless network, not Verizon while in CA. Oops. Won't be doing that again -- unless I'm in a pinch, at least I know it works there if necessary.

even more fun is the fact that Canadian cell towers are not as regulated as US ones, so you can be in the US near the border and and your phone will pick Canadian towers over US ones, necessitating calls to customer service to remove charges.

I just checked Lenovo Canadas website and there does not appear to be any high speed wireless data options available. Seeing this it would appear that there are no Canadian carriers that support EV-DO, at least through built in Thinkpad products.
