    Hey all,

Does a clean install of Windows Vista get rid of the hidden recovery partition (the one where you press the ThinkVantage button to get to on system startup)? I'm thinking of doing a clean install of Windows Vista and would like an outlet back to XP if necessary. Actually, will the ThinkVantage button respond the same even with Windows Vista installed instead of XP? Thanks all

Onion - Vista will give you the option to pick which partition to install it on - just like XP - although the interface is a lot different. After booting the DVD, you should see a small partition and a large one - assuming XP was installed on just one partition. You can also pick the "New" option on the lower right of the partitioning screen to create a new partition. As long as you don't delete the small partition - which should be listed first - you should be fine.

I have a question about clean installs on thinkpads. Rather, I'm just planning to upgrade vista basic to business. Would I have to export some type of power management configuration in order to keep the laptop working at peak efficiency. I don't want to lose battery life because it's one of the main reason why I would get a thinkpad. Or is it okay just to reinstall the utility that came with the laptop and go from there.

Hmmm - I'm not (yet!) a Lenovo owner - but I would think you'd be fine just to re-install the utility and configure it once installed. I do know this much about Vista and power management; my H-P 2133 gets noticeably better battery life when its running Vista in the power saver mode. Its set up as a dual-booter, overall it runs much better in XP but gets better batt life in Vista.
