I ran a nero cd rom diagnostic speed test, and noticed that on the maximum speed, the cd bay vibrates at a very high frequency. Just wondering if anybody has vibration problems on their cd rom while installing anything or using the max cd rom speed. by the way, i have the BIOS cd rom setting to HIGH, if that matters.
Thanks...

Sounds normal, if the CD isn't perfectly balanced it will vibrate, especially at high speed.

I have the same problem. Will this damage the drive?

It's hell on the bearings, that's for sure.

In the BIOS you can set the CD/DVD drive's speed to low, helps a bit.

I just tested it out and mines vibrate very little. You can hardly feel it. -
happened to me once when installing oblivion. but it hasnt happened again

So whats the consensus? Most of you have it, or few? If this really is a design problem, could it be the reason why the BIOS defaults the cd speed to normal? I also forgot to mention that there is not just vibration, the cd tray seems to be vibrating against the chassis, making quite a loud sound, kinda like the sound of a small personal hair trimmer, and when I push the tray in while its spinning, some vibration stops.
So that in mind, is it normal to have that much sound while on max cd speed? -

I've had a number of CD drives that buzz when running unless I hold the tray with my fingers.

I have the same problem on my T60. It only happened since I've been taking the drive out to use an ultrabay HDD. I hope it's harmless!

Most notebook DVD drives are not known to run quietly at full speed, so it sounds normal. Some discs just aren't as well balanced as others as well, so...
On that note, the BIOS CD-ROM speed cap setting is something I wish more notebook manufactures would implement. It can be done through software, but a simple BIOS setting is much more convenient IMO and it's quite effective. The drive in my T60 when set to Normal speed is the quietest notebook optical drive I've used.
Does anybody's laptop vibrate while using cd rom?
