Thinkwiki is horrendously incomplete as a source in general, and has gotten worse over the last couple of years since some of the "oldtimers" that did a lot of editing back in the days are way too disgusted with Lenovo to pick up any work at all...

How does this CPU compare to 720qm from W510?

ps. How much does chukwe's laptop's worth? Assuming he's got a 1600*900 screen instead of FHD.

Sandy Bridge was a huge step up when compared to the previous generation, in all respects.

Well, here are two current listings (in one ad) from TPF:

Of course, the prices in the U.S. are usually lower when compared to the rest of the world.

In my opinion first-gen mobile quad cores (e.g. 720qm) were terrible.

They ran extremely hot, consumed around 20W even when idle, and choosing a quad-core over a dual-core (i5) back then meant you had to sacrifice clock-speed for more cores. Architecturally, they were also older than their i5 counterparts, as Clarksfield was manufactured using the dated 45nm process too, instead of 32nm. Clarksfield didn't have integrated graphics either.

And my wife used to be 9 back in 2011, now she's a 4 and fat.

    Obviously I'm talking about 2015

Beware of the screen lottery on these machines.

If you get a system with a LG screen, you'll love it.

Should it come with a Samsung panel you're likely to be miserable.

yes I currently have two with the exact cpu in it. I actually had a 2920xm at one point and I prefer the 2860qm and used the heatsink that was in the 2920xm. 2920xm didn't do anything for me speed wise and I prefer cool/stable over overclocking.

Yes, presuming you can find one for a reasonable amount of money. I paid $115 for a NOS example that ended up in my T61.

How much is the LG version better than the Samsung one? I'm concerned with vertical viewing angel, not to fussed about horizontal viewing angle (in fact, I want horizontal viewing angle to be bad so that privacy is protected) or colour accuracy.

Let me put it to you this way:

    a) The Samsung WUXGA panel found in T61p and W500 is arguably the worst screen I've ever encountered on a ThinkPad.

    b) LG Philips WUXGA screen is the best TN panel I've seen on a ThinkPad.

Do bear in mind that I'm only taking CCFL-lit screens in account with these statements.
