    Hi all,

I was wondering if Thinkpad W520 battery fit Thinkpad W530? Especially, for 9-cell one.

    Thanks!

Likely, yes. But you will have to charge that battery by means other than the W530, which, when detecting the absence of a wunderchip in the battery, will suck it dry without using main power to recharge it.

Could you please give me more information about 'wunderchip'? Thanks!

Kaso is referring to the new authentication chip in the new Tx30, Wx30, and Xx30 series Thinkpads, which is purportedly due to the RapidCharge battery feature of the new Thinkpads that can charge up to 80% within 30 min. Batteries that lack this authentication chip (any older Thinkpad batteries and most current 3rd party batteries) will be discharged normally, but will not be charged.

Is it possible to disable 'rapidcharge' feature in W530 so that I can use W520 battery?

rapidcharge is only on the T430s, the auth chip is to prevent this party batteries which they claim improves safety. No, as of now there is no way to use older batteries

So, even though for those authentic older model battery from W520 will be treated as 'third-party' battery by the new line of thinkpad W530.

This is bad. Especially for those have a spare battery around.

Decided to test this with my W520's 9-cell and a review W530. Trying to boot from battery produces the following message:

    Oh well...

    I didn't press ESC because I don't take chances with property I don't actually own :p.

Pressing escape doesn't do anything. The computer still runs and uses the battery. If you plug an AC adapter into the computer with the rogue W520 or W510 battery, it will not charge those batteries.

Seems odd it won't charge a legit Lenovo battery.

You know... I wonder if that can be controlled with sufficient poking and prodding of the EC. I know that tp-smapi can do things like force discharging and inhibit charging, so obviously the EC has *some* say in the matter.

Perhaps all that's needed is a sufficiently motivated pair of reverse-engineers willing to do the necessary clean-room voodoo... :D

    There you go.

Lenovo tells its beloved users that it invents this technology expressly for their safety. You don't want to damage any body part, do you?

"Selling computers is like selling fresh fruits," declared Lenovo CEO recently. Ah, the chip is there to insure battery freshness. :D (I sense a Freudian urge relative to "fruits.")
