My X61s' 8 cell battery can wiggle about 1mm. I don't plan on carrying the laptop by the battery. Will the battery become loose over time? I have a T40 which I bought secondhand and the 9 cell battery can wiggle a couple millimeters.

i think it'll be secure, so long as you take good care of it.

one thing i'd warn you about, though, is that i've dropped my notebook twice (the first time it fell from about knee-high cuz it slipped out of my hand as i was putting it in my backpack, and the second time my backpack strap broke and the whole backpack just fell to the floor), and both times it landed on the battery (makes sense cuz it's so heavy).

the laptop is perfectly fine, but a little piece of the battery that latches in snapped off, so the right side can be pulled back to the point where the latop will shut off. it's kinda annoying, cuz sometimes i'll be typing with it on my lap, and my pants will pull the battery far enough and away and then my laptop just shuts off.

it's just enough to be annoying, but not enough to warrant buying a new battery.

to clarify for all the people eagerly waiting to bash on thinkpad quality: this is only because i DROPPED my laptop, and it landed on the battery.

Just moments ago I fixed my wobbly battery on my T40 with a sticky sided heat resistant duct tape. The brand is Nashua tape and I picked it up at Home Depot. I purchased it to fix a heat duct in my home and thought it might be the ticket to fix my battery.

I cut 2 1/2inch long strips and tried one (not thick enough) and put both piecs together and it fit perfectly. Not to tight just a snug fit.

I'm sure anything sticky stuff would work but I liked the fact that this could stand up to the heat generated by the machine

wow.. i did not know there is such thing as heat resistant double-sided tape. i've thought about getting some double-sided tape, but i was concerned that it would melt and become all gunky.
