So basically CC is the same as Comp USA except some Comp USAs are still around?

Well thanks for the info. I just wanted to see the edge in person before buying but it looks like I'm going to have to order it to see it first.

It is operated by the same people so there is the chance there's overlap in what's offered for sure. I've never seen a ThinkPad Edge in a store, and it's tough to find even the flagship ThinkPad brands. You might want to check if your local Best Buy has a "Best Buy for Business" center inside as they do carry the ThinkPad Edge on their site:

Best Buy For Business - Announcement Center

Good luck, and don't forget the restocking fee for Lenovo.com is 15% if you order something and want to return it, some are not aware of that.

Thanks for the link. It seems my local Best Buy does have a business center so I'll have to check that out later tonight.

If I remember correctly, there was a Thinkpad Edge at my Office Depot.

Good luck finding a Thinkpad anything in any retail stores lol

Around my area (Comp-USA, Circuit City, all went out of business) the only computer stores left (PC Richards, Best Buy, etc.) do NOT have Thinkpads on display. The ONLY place that did had SOME (older models at that) was my local computer fix-it place (an authorized Lenovo repair center, who also repairs Dell, Apple, HP, etc.). So, not a chain store by far.

I wish these stores would carry them though. I bet once the general public got to playing with a Thinkpad out on display, they will automatically recognize the higher quality put into these machines !

In Boston, Massachusetts, Staples carries Thinkpad Edges (along with Dell Vostros and HP Probooks), albeit with a significant mark-up.

Micro Center has carried R-series, T-series, X-series, and Edges before, though the one near me currently only has the x120e. They also carried refurb Dell Latitudes on a couple occasions.

Best Buy generally only carries cheap plastic consumer laptops. Last time I checked they didn't even carry better ones like the HP Envy. No wonder people buy Macs - they're much better than everything else Best Buy carries.

Sadly, I think the true response will be the ones I get all the time.

-Umm ---it's black. (said flatly, with a blank stare)

-It looks old. How long have you had it?

Consumer laptops have become a cornucopia of fingerprint-attracting gloss, swirly patterns, and LifeSaver™ colors. So much so that people expect it. The average consumer isn't wowed by the following things, either:

    • A quality keyboard
    • A TrackPoint
    • Stainless Steel hinges
    • A magnesium chassis with carbon fiber roll cage
    • A rubberized cover

Many of them just care about how cheap it is, and whether they can run Facebook on it because if they couldn't keep up with their giant friend network or play Farmville, well, life would suck. Most of them probably cannot type at the speed required to pass a test for an office job.

To appreciate a ThinkPad, you need to be able to look at a laptop from a perspective that you'd look at when choosing a fine watch, or quality power tools. Most of us here actually value engineering of a device that improves its use. We value rugged construction that means that in two years, our system's display won't be floppy, and a keyboard that we can type at around 95% of the speed of a quality desktop keyboard or faster. Probably three quarters of us think of a TrackPoint as a must-have; the average consumer doesn't get them, and more often than not, rejects them compared to a touchpad that forces them to take their hands off the keyboard just to use the mouse.

The average person doesn't want to pay the extra price you and I are willing to for "quality". They want to pay the lowest price that gets the job done, and they're most likely willing to listen to whatever the retail sales person says and take it at face value, rather than doing their own research.

So true about the Trackpoint. I HATED them when we used them at work (the seldom times I used our X31's), but when I bought my T61, I vowed to never use a laptop withOUT one. I simply love the trackpoints. So much quicker / easier to use than the pad.
Now, any laptop that has a Trackpoint is ALL business machines. So, that is what I will continue to buy.

While most people do find my laptop "old looking" / ugly / whatever, while they are on thier 3rd Macbook Pro, I'd still be on my original Thinkpad :) :)

If Lenovo put ThinkPads out, what they would probably do (or what would be wise from a retail standpoint) would be to market the ThinkPad L-series to business stores, like Staples. It would allow said retailers to sell a business-class notebook, at a lower price point, and it wouldn't cause complaints among vendors like CDW that sell the T, W, and X series ThinkPads. This is what companies like Steelcase do --they sell a differently-branded product line to the home office stores, that won't compete with their other methods of distribution. Usually it is the budget member of the family.

A couple of US retailers are selling the ThinkPad SL line (e.g., Costco), but it's previous-generation technology at a $550-600 price. Some of it may be that Lenovo is looking to close out the SL line, and has found willing partners. Reviews on Costco's website have been overwhelmingly positive, though.

As I work in a retail store (Microcenter specifically), alot of manufacturers have XX model for YY retail store. We did carry some ThinkPads (refurbs, T400/T410, X61, x120e) but most people saw the prices and are like why would I spend 1400 on such an ugly laptop?? Of course then they go buy a consumer notebook for 500 and wonders why it is a piece of crap. That's the reason why alot of retail stores don't carry ThinkPads, people get them from Lenovo or other resellers.
