The T400 uses the same docking solutions as previous models (e.g. T60, T61) : the ThinkPad Essential Port Replicator 250510W (basic docking solution, only VGA-out available), the ThinkPad Advanced Mini Dock 250410U (i recommend this one: digital video-out [DVI], fanless) and the ThinkPad Advanced Dock 250310U (supports 1 half-height PCI-ExpressCard, useful for multi-monitor environments, has a fan).

The Mini Dock is the sweet spot. The port replicator doesn't have it's own adapter. You can probably get one used in the $70-80 range.

Clarifying ZaZ's comment: The Mini Dock (250410U) comes with its own 90W AC adapter. Very handy in that you just leave that one in place and use the T400's when mobile. (though if you can get a deal on the 65W adapter it's smaller/lighter than the 90W and works fine on my T400 -- but I typically use integrated graphics)

There's no port replicator on the port replicator if you care.
