How do you undock your computer from one of these docks?

I just received my new X230 and I noticed that the dock that I ordered with it, the 433715U Mini Dock Series 3 with USB 3.0, does not have an eject button like my old dock.

Do you mean eject as in soft eject? They dilapidated that feature because everything was hotpluggable.

    Yes.

I use multiple USB storage devices. They're not hot-pluggable. I guess I'll have to script something to eject all my devices with a keyboard shortcut. If the solution is in any way elegant, I'll post it here when I'm done.

USB storage devices as in external HDDS are hot-pluggable.

I wrote a cool script using AutoHotkey.

Since the drive in my X230 is an SSD, I bought an external drive to handle downloading large files and other tasks that I may not want to subject my SSD to on a regular basis.

When I dock (or just plug in the external on the road), it automatically detects the drive and launches a few programs on it. The programs all run in the background in my case.

I also set a shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+E) to gracefully close the programs. When they are fully closed, it displays a message letting me know that it's safe to eject.

Pintu and the Colonel are correct in saying that external drives are hotpluggable, provided that the Removal Policy in Win7 is set to Quick Removal (which is the default). However, programs that are writing to the drive (or even running from the drive) won't be too happy when you abruptly unplug it. I wanted a quick way to "undock", instead of having to check for running programs from the external drive and manually shut them down. The script saves me lots of time and worry!
