I would use it if it was integrated into my notebook, however, I would absolutely not use those USB Microsoft ones. Totally unnecessary chunk of plastic.

I use mine all the time. It's quicker than having to manually type out the password.

Yup, I use it to log in. It is pretty convenient. You can log in with either the fingerprint reader or a password.

Now that I have it, I'll probably never get another laptop without it. If they come out with a good usb version, I think desktop owners would like it too.

I just got my T61, but love using it to login to Windows. Makes locking and unlocking the machine so easy that I do it all the time.

    Hey stringbeans,
IMO the integrated fingerprint reader is probably one of the most useless inventions in a laptop, but at the same time also the one with the highest fun factor. I use it all the time now whenever I have to fill in a passwort, and I always feel like batman!!
So I would say yes, it's definetely worth the extra 30 bucks ...

I use it several times a day only to log into windows. I do not use it to memorize my website passwords though.

anyone know how to customize the Vista login screen so it doesn't show the finger printer reader as another account?

Nice thing this fingerprint reader. I use it all the time to log on into Vista. Easier that typing the password. Although it is very disturbing when you use it to log on onto web sites. It takes too long.

Initially I asked myself the same question, but I think with the software it has to treat the finger print reader differently then a keystroke login.

I also wondered if I could just have the Finger Print Reader Login only available, but then I remembered when the finger print software crapped out once on me, and I had to reboot to fix it... but what if rebooting doesn't fix it should it happen again? Then I'd be left w/o the ability to login to Vista unless I hack my laptop... and that's no bueno. :D

I was wondering the same thing...but you never want to take that chance of having the FP reader hardware or software crapping out on you...then you are basically stranded

Never used the FP reader. Cause none of my 2 current Thinkpads (will be 3 in a few days) has it. I guess I won't mind if it comes for free, but just don't think it worth $30. :)

I use mine to start Windows and to log into web sites. I use it to log into this web site. I have no need to lock files so I don't use the full capacity of function available. Total use is probably 2-4 times a day. More as I visit more sites with this new machine.

Speed is not the issue for me--it's remembering additional passwords that I find to be a problem. Or remembering passwords that I didn't make up myself.
