Do I still need to install Chipset Drivers on my T60?

I installed Vista Ultimate on my T60 and I checked Dev Manager after installation and I noticed it found USB 1 and USB 2 drivers and hardware. It also found Intel Chipset all 82801 (ICH7), 945 Processor to DRAM controller, Express PCI Root Port and the SM Bus drivers.

Here's why I ask. In the past after installing Vista U, I installed the chipset drivers for my T60 and checked the entries pre and post chipset drivers and there was no difference in device manager.

This time I decided to go with what Vista found and just went with the installed chipset drivers part of the Vista installation process. Is it still recommended to install the T60 chipset drivers? Keep in mind the system is running great and very stable.

If there is a driver for it, I would.

You don’t have to. Vista comes with a set of chipset drives, but the latest ones from Intel tend to be newer and will update existing drivers.

That's what I was thinking. I mean it found everything. :)

When I clean installed Vista Business x64 on my laptop, I installed the chipset driver for my T61p. I followed the steps in Stallen's guide and things are working perfectly.

Thanks for the link. Those chipset drivers in the installation guide are the same ones i've used in the past and when I installed them they really didn't change anything. That's why I decided to stick with what Vista found during the installation process.

No problem. If you are happy with what Vista gives you, go for it. The guide basically mentions that it is best to install the drivers from the company that made the product rather than have Vista's version. Thats why I went with the Intel and lenovo drivers and did not allow Vista to install drivers during updates.

Yeah things seem to be running fine but what I was getting is that during the initial installation of Vista it found all of my chipset drivers. So when Vista booted up to the desktop for the very first time all of those drivers were found on my T60.

In the past I would install the chipset drivers afterwards and it never changed anything in device manager so this time I just decided to leave well enough alone.

One thing I hate about the T60 are the really low sounding speakers.
