Do -NOT- get a 160GB Hard Drive! It will delay everything

    Just a warning..

I ordered my T61 back in MAY (22) and it's yet to be delivered. Why? Well I was part of the screwup they had initially, but it's still delayed considerably.

The reason, I'm told by my account rep (who has been very helpful btw), is because of the 160GB hdd. He told me a couple weeks ago that it had a 35 business day delay. Turns out it was a 35bd delay when he found out, not from the initial order.

    WTF???

SO he's trying to change my order, keeping the pricing I had, and taking off the HDD. I can get my own HDD for the same price and ACTUALLY get it, and maybe even sell off the stock one or something (or keep it in case the new one dies ever).

Anyway, just thought I'd let you know. If you wanted to get the 160GB hard drive, just keep the stock one and buy your own if you expect to ever get your machine.

sorry to hear that, the 160gb harddrive is pretty cool because it uses that new vertical tech.

Well I don't know what I'm going to get, but it'll be not through Lenovo since they can't seem to get any for some reason.

I ended up in the same boat as Saneless. I recently created a new order because of the Tailormade deal and included the 160G drive at the same time. It delayed my estimated shipment until September! I'm trying to cancel that order now and I have created a new one with just the 120G drive.

    Latest order:
    Placed 7/11
    Estimated 8/7

Yeah - that is the issue holding me up, the 160 GB hard drive. The sales rep told me that a 7 week delay (ordered 6/29) seemed unreasonable to him, but they wanted to over estimate the time. According to him, the supplier messed up and they are waiting on a new shipment. He said it was expected to be delivered by the end of July. We will see. I thought about changing my hard drive, but since I ordered the 14.1 w/ camera (also backed up 3 weeks or so) , I really wouldn't get it any faster. When you change your order you go to the end of the line, said the sales rep.

I'm goign to do another order, this time with the stock drive. My rep redid it for me, quoted me based on the original prices, and is moving me up to expedited status.

Question... got it all taken care of, going to just ship with the stock drive.

I'm going to buy my own, what kind does the T61 use? I'm confused with the PATA, SATA, ATA-6, etc options.

    Thanks.

nm, found on their site under parts that it's SATA.

I was going to do a clean isntall anyways. Can you order a notebook without a hd?

I'm on my 3rd order already:

    1) Order 7/9/07: 7300, 1G, 120G, WXGA+, BT, camera, DVDRW, GMA X3100, Intel ABGN. Estimated 8/7 on order status page.
    2) Order 7/11/07, morning: Found out about the Tailormade discount, decided to resubmit order and ended up getting the 160G HD instead of 120 for the same price, downgraded to Thinkpad ABG. Estimated 9/3 on order status page!
    3) Order 7/11/07, evening: Confirmed with a rep that 160G HD was causing all the delays. Switched back to 120G HD (still with Tailormade), new estimate at first was 8/9, but now it's 8/13 on order status page.

Anyway, I'm sick of messing with the order. I still want the 1440x900 and camera even though they also contribute to delays, but I think there can be no end to this if one keeps looking at the current product configurations and the latest notebook discounts! I'm going to just wait it out at this point and then ask for a price match later if I need to.

My latest ship date after having my order placed by a rep yesterday was 8/1.

It might be even sooner since I was part of the initial May screwup orders.

Spoop: I probably would've gotten mine if they didnt' do that whole forget the chassis BS earlier.

Now to just find out how to install Vista on a new drive using the same license :)

You're screwed. I ordered several T61's in May w/ 160 GB drives. Nothing has shipped. You said your Lenovo rep was "very helpful". If he was helpful, you'd already have your system. My rep has told me repeatedly that the systems would be shipping any day now, and that's gone on for a month. He reconfigured my order to remove the 160's a week ago, promised shipping within 3-5 business days. Today he sent me an email saying it might ship today or tomorrow and if it doesn't he would "file a complaint on your behalf with our customer relations management team and have a resolution owner contact you directly within 24 to 48 business hours regarding the order".

That doesn't exude much confidence to me.

I'm absolutely frustrated with these guys. Complete lack of integrity due to a malfunctioning supply chain. They need to read up on the Theory of Constraints http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory_of_constraints and rework their supply chain. I don't think these sales reps are bad, they are the victim of a busted system.

I disagree 100%. Lenovo reps or any salesman that works for major companies know s*** about the product they are selling. I gurantee I know more about computers/technological hardware than 90% of the people that work @ Lenovo. It takes no knowledge to sell someone a PC over the phone when they are simply using Lenovo.com to make the purchase. You can sell someone something with an elementary education.

I feel that being a salesman takes literally no skill/education unless you are a salesman that is selling major things like servers/software packages for fortune 500 companies. Car salesman, PC salesman, any kind of basic salesman are just flat out retarded.

Waht's that, a 60gb 5400 rpm? Did they knock off the price of your upgraded 160gb?

Maybe you should try to change your order to the 100gb 7200rpm drive, it's only $30 extra for now. (unless that item will delay shipment)

$30 for that drive would be sweet.

SkiBunny: Yeah, they took off the $90 it would cost to upgrade from the 60 to the 160.

And since I did the whole Bill Me Later thing, when I originally ordered it was 3 months BML, but now it's 6.. so I get 100 bucks off and have an extra 3 months to pay it off (I have some serious money coming in this december :)

Bought the new hdd in cash. Hell I'd buy the PC in cash but if I can defer payment at 0% interest for 6 months, who wouldn't take advantage of that? My cash is more valuable to me right now :)

I WOULD NOT change my order if I were you guys. As I
said in my other post, I ordered my computer on June 29
woth the 160 GB HD and it ARRIVED TODAY, 5 days EARLIER then the original shipping date. I was impressed that I received express shipping when I went with the free shipping option. My laptop left Hong Kong on the 11th and was at my door today, 13th at 10:00 a.m. :).

You're lucky, but I most certainly would not expect to personally have that kind of luck.

As of right now I have NO crazy addons. basically just the + resolution monitor, 1GB ram, and intel wireless and turbo memory. Everything else is stock and I"ll do all the addons myself (memory and hdd)

Hi, yesterday I received form Lenovo my T61 which is configured with a 160GB (although it only shows 142GB after I right-click the properties of the drive). I placed the order at Lenovo website on July 9 and received it yesterday July 19. The shipping date was end of August (August 31?). It is more than one month ahead of schedule.

Wohooo! It appears as though the 160G HD delays are soon going to be over.

However, the WXGA+ with camera might now be the long pole. I ordered yesterday (7/19) with 160HD and camera, and my new ESD is 9/4

    Great! thanks

Could you please advise the brand or "name" of your 160GB disk drive? (click on My Computer (from your desktop or inside Windows Explorer), right-click on Local Disk, then Properties, then the Hardware tab). Thanks.
