Hello all, I just ordered the GT755M5 y510p ultrabay gpu & the y400 fan. The idea that I've got is to take the bezel off of the GT755M5 and replace it with the bezel that comes with the fan (not sure, but this may require some fine dremeling). I don't think I'd suggest this course of action for anyone else cause it's not technically supported,I don't particularly consider this to be cost effective, and I may run into issues. I've been reading that the ultrabay 755m has some issues with cooling, so I'm going to remove a bit of the aluminum shell that blocks the vent under the ultrabay port to get more air in there. I've also read that the ultrabay gpu isn't properly "thermally pasted", so I'll look into replacing paste and adding pads once everything comes in. There's an estimate of "over 5 weeks till the fan comes in, but as soon as it does, I'll be able to get to work. I got too excited to wait to post though.
Any thoughts?

Where did you order the GPU? It's EOL from Lenovo and they won't ship one. Check the Lenovo/IBM section on the Tech Inferno forums. There's a lot of good cooling DIY there.
-
I'm interested in this in the long run, but I'm afraid It will be nearly impossible to obtain the extra gpu and y400 fan by the time im ready to order them.
-
I ordered the gpu from everyone's favorite biding site  (I get tons of stuff from there every month) and thanks for the lead on where to get some ideas for cooling mods! Heat is my major concern with this project.
I wish the wait time wasn't so long on the fan though.
I'm also gonna order 1 matching 8gb stick of ram to go with the 1 that my laptop came with, a better wireless card, and likely a much bigger SSD than the 24gb one. All that is gonna happen way down the line though. -
where did you order the y400 fan from ?
-
From Lenovo: Y400 Removable Fan S2601 | 0C22229 | Lenovo | US
Sorry for the late reply. The weekend was nuts with school work. -
not good man. I suppose it means they dont actually have the part ? I mean where in the world would the part have to be in for it to take 5 months to ship?
-
Yea, that's what I'm thinking. Seems like by the end of this project, I'll be making a mold of the dvd drive bezel out of fiberglass or something. I can't stand having part of my laptop not being flush.
My question is why would they sell me something that they don't have? My checkings account was already charged and everything -
I'll keep everyone watching updated on the gpu and cooling mods anyways. I'll still use it at home, but I'm too ashamed to show a laptop with a tacked on gpu on campus.
It's pricey, and it needs some modding to fit the y410p; but it cost less than upgrading to another laptop with the power of the GT755m Sli. Just in case anyone else wanted the ultrabay gpu, both of these sellers have "more than 10 available" in stock.
Lenovo IdeaPad Y15" Removable Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT755M5 PN 888015133 | eBay ($247)
Lenovo IdeaPad Y15" Removable Grapgics NVIDIA GeForce GT755M5 Used | eBay ($289) -
Thanks, I'm watching those too as I'm close to buying a used y410p (or possible a y510p, havent been able to find a picture with one next to the other for size comparison) and upgrading to the dual gpu in the future. The thing is that i only have around $600 at the moment.
There are some y410p with the GT 750m available, but there's only one seller that has the 750m5.
I definitely would not mind sticking the y510p ultrabay gpu on it as long as it works, to be honest. Do we know if it would work ? -
I've heard that it has worked before. There's a post on the lenovo forums that says it worked, no problem. There's also a post that states that the ultrabay card was overheating, and throttling.
The success/fail rate that I'm seeing so far is 2 fails, and 8 successes. Also, on the 3dmark website there are tons of sli 755m results with the same motherboard as my y410p. I think it has the same one as the y510p -
great. I hear you just have to limit the max FPS so that the second card doesnt run 100% all the time which is why they say it overheats.
-
I set a framerate limit at 60fps yesterday, but I haven't really taken a look at the before/after numbers yet. I uploaded some benchmarks (from msi Kombustor) to YouTube, so as soon as it's done processing, everyone should be able to see it here: Lenovo y410p GT755m benchmark - YouTube
Keep in mind that I was recording at the same time that I was benchmarking, so the framerate is a tad lower than it should be. Also I left the 60fps limit on during the test.
P.S. The gpu is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. And the 170w power cord is coming in on Friday. I'll try to test it for a few seconds (<30) on the 120w power supply, but if it starts to get hot within those few seconds, I don't want to risk burning it up. -
great, hope to see the y410p sli working properly. If it doesnt, i think ill just buy a y510p
-
Huh... so I just ran the 1 million particle test again at 900p with 2xMSAA this time, and I'm averaging 45fps (that's more twice what I got at 720p with no AA). This confuses me greatly. Maybe it's because my battery is fully charged now? Or cause I didn't run it in a window this time. I'll check again tomorrow when the battery is low after my classes.

Here's a previous thread on this topic.

Haha, I figured someone else must have planned what I'm doing down to swapping the bezel and all
The gpu came in today! Tested it out for all of 20 seconds, and it's a great power boost! I had some issues with Nvidia Control Panel not opening, but that was fixed by installing the latest version and restarting. I did also have to install the Sli vbios from Lenovo. All in all, it was an easy install!
I'll upload benchmark results on YouTube tomorrow when the 170w power supply comes in! -
thats great! how did you get the GPU to fit ? could you post some pics to see what it looks like at the moment ?
-
I'd like to request a thousand pardons for my absence for the past few days..
Here's some pics of the laptop with the gpu inside
You can only see the card at certain angles unless you're off to the side of it.
I also removed some of the fabric that in on the inside of the vent. My temps under full load for 30 minutes are:
GPU 1: 78-86 degrees celsius
Ultrabay GPU: 73-82 degrees celsius
Both are around 4-9 degrees less. I have no clue why the main gpu is so much hotter than the ultrabay gpu. I'll get some better thermal paste, and see if it helps.
Here's where I'm gonna have to cut the bezel (I carved a line in the plastic along where it needs to be cut) to make it fit in with the y410p
So far, I love having sli!! I can run everything I have on max settings now (except Crysis 3 because the framerate drops to 23)
I'll be running some more test soon (probably later today). I've got a ton of homework to get to first though. -
awesome. Whats that on the bottom grill? did you remove part of it or was it just dust ?
-
That's a cloth that was part of the grill. I removed it because it blocks a decent amount of air.
Since Kombustor doesn't like Sli... I did a benchmark in Grid 2 with 8xMSAA and all graphical settings maxed out.
Here's what the Sli GT755m's can crank out:
This is what the single GT755m did:
I also recorded the benchmarks with Nvidia Shadowplay.
Here are the Youtube links:
Single GPU Benchmark Video
Sli GPUs Benchmark Video
I'll get a recording of Titanfall, and Crysis 3 as well. If anyone want's to see more, let me know, and I'll post my games list to choose from. -
Interesting....wonder if that fabric's also on the y510p...
-
It does, I couldn't find a pic of it being removed, but I've read post on technoinferno forums about it being removed.
I did find a pic of the cuts in the body to improve air flow though..

hey man, hows your lenovo holding up ? I've just ordered the second gt755m card and a power supply, both off ebay. Sadly the power supply adapter comes from china and will take like 15-20 working days to arrive.
Btw, did you ever cut the original y510p bezel to make it fit or do you still use the card with no bezel at all ? -
I'm guessing that the power cord hasn't come in yet. My y410p is holding up great! I cut the bezel on the gt755m5 gpu so I can protect the cooling fins when I transport it. Also, I need to warn you... Removing the ultrabay gpu without the bezel is a serious pain in the butt. Imagine if the dvd drive was a bit harder to remove, and it also didn't have anywhere to grip on to. It is very difficult to say the least. That's the other reason I put the bezel on.
Sorry for the 10 day late reply. I wasn't expecting anyone to be posting. I'll subscribe to the thread so I'll know if anyone has questions in the future. -
thanks. No, the power chord isnt here yet. How did you cut the bezel though? Im thinking i shouldnt use the gpu until i cut the bezel since its so difficult to take it out.
