I have a T400s with a displayport on the back. I wanted to plug it into my LCD TV (that doesn't have a D-Sub port) this past weekend and tried using my Displayport to HDMI adaptor. I plugged the adapter into my T400s and then connected the HDMI cable. My TV keeps telling me there is no signal, also the I'm not seeing an additional monitor plugged in under display properties.

Does anyone know if this is supposed to work? I don't know anyone else who has a displayport, so I'm not sure if it's my adapter that's not working, or if there is some setting to get the Displayport to output an HDMI signal...

This is the adapter that I bought:

    You got the right adapter.

I'd figure out why you don't see an additional monitor under display properties first... Have you tried enabling it, or using your hotkey to enable clone/dualview? I can give you more specific help if you indicate what OS you're using.

Sorry, can't help, except to say that I've got the T400s, and bought the Lenovo DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, and both my LCD monitor and TV pick up the signal on their HDMI in. No settings changes necessary in my case - both displays (laptop and external) show up with the Fn+F7 toggle.

I have a T500 and use a displayport to HDMI adapter to hook it up to my Sony TV. No tweaks or setting changes are required to get it to work. However, I was at my brother's house over the holidays and tried to hook the T500 up to his Philips TV and got the "no signal" message. He is an IT guy and we could not find anything to tweak or change to get it to work. When I got home, I plugged it back into my Sony and it worked fine as always. Go figure.

    Best of luck.

How are you getting audio to your Sony TV?

I use a double male ended cable from the headphone out on my laptop to an audio input that is linked with the HDMI input on the TV. Works just fine.

I'm running Windows 7, and I'm pretty sure now that it's actually my TV that is the problem. I too have a Phillips TV (3000 series, bought at Wal-mart cause it was on sale). I took my laptop with the adapter over to my parents place (Sony V-series LCD TV), and it worked right away.

When I got home, I think I spent another hour trying to get it to work on my TV, and have pretty much just given up. Thanks for your help everyone.

Will you please link us to the kind of adapter you're referring to? I presume it only supports 2-channel, stereo audio?

This would actually be a good question to ask in an A/V specific forum, like avsforum. It's a pretty common issue, even with native HDMI connectors. The first thing I would try is to connect everything, turn on the TV to the proper input (you may need to force this somehow, with like a BD player or something) and THEN power on your Thinkpad

I suspect your TV isn't properly sending back the EDID. This helps the transmitting video signal (e.g. your Intel integrated graphics chip) identify the video capabilities of the display, and in fact if it's even "connected" (Graphics card: hello? Anyone there? TV: Me!)

Monitors obviously have to pass this information because just about in every situation, the card requires it. But often in A/V, the components will just assume the display is there and pass it regardless. Therefore, often TVs don't bother.

I had this issue with a HTPC that would turn on to record stuff while the TV was off. The system assumed the TV wasn't there and it wouldn't pass the video signal until I restarted the computer, or went to standby. of course that wasn't an option if it was still actively recording, which happened more times than not.

There are solutions available to mitigate this problem. The differences in price reflects the capability of the device, like if it passes HDCP and/or audio. The audio portion may not matter as I dont' know if the T400s can even pass it, but if you lack HDCP, you may have issues playing DRM content like Blu-rays without a clandestine software piece (which is also pricey).

DVI Detective and DVI doctor comes to mind. I ended up shelling out a bit more for the DVI Detective Plus.

Also the other thing you MUST consider, is if you actually require an active HDMI adapter. I'm not sure if the Intel graphics has an option to pass HDMI signals. if it does not, that would explain why this adapter doesn't work.
Unfortunately an active adapter is significantly more expensive :( Luckily, it appears the graphics on the 4500 chips will pass HDMI if need be over DP. So probably your TV..

the displayport on the current thinkpad is video only.
