The G580 looks like a decent laptop for me but I'm put off by the supposedly poor contrast ratio/high level of blacks according to Notebookcheck -

Review Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews

However they do say in the G580 review that such measures are not always accurate. Does anyone have one? How do they find it?

If the display is significantly worse than my Acer 6920G I won't get one.

This is a free forum. I doubt many have seen the G580 or Acer, which makes it more difficult to give an opinion. Given its budget origins, I'd say below average is probably to be expected.

I have two Z580`s and i find the display above avarage, the panel is made by AUO and has an nice colour to it, and the whites seem white too me, i have watched an number of video`s on it and the contrast ratio is normal for an cheap panel, the horizontal viewing angle is good, the vertical is not so good, but this is normal for most notebooks.

I have bought a couple of display hardware calibrators over the years, as some displays really needed it, I got my calibrator out this morning and was going to calibrate my Z580 display, But i did not bother as i am really happy with it, and i like to play around with my gadjets , apart from adjusting the brightness that is all that i have touched, as i said i have two Z580`s i bought another one as i was really happy with the first one.

And i have had owned 30+ notebooks/netbooks so i have seen a lot of displays.
