I don't get audio from the DP on my X220. Does the DP support embedded audio on this laptop?

I am using a DP to HDMI dongle to connect to my HDMI display. This dongle is working well (i.e. both the video and the audio are OK) when using it with a Dell laptop, but with the X220 Thinkpad I only get the video - without the audio.

A strange one this, ThinkPads are known to be very fickle when it comes to Displayport to HDMI adapters. The X220 should be able to output both Video and Audio signals via the Displayport, most problems tend to be on the adapter itself. You may want to have a read on this particular thread for information, even though its for the T420 it should also apply to the X220 as well.

I get both video and audio with this cheap DP to HDMI adapter

Weird thing is that I have to use 1776x1000 (and center the image) instead of of any full screen modes like 1920x1080 or 1600x900 (otherwise all the edges are cut off) but that's probably because my 42" plasma TV is really old.

Lack of built-in HDMI is the probably the thing that I dislike most about the X220 :(

Do you see a new device in your Sound option? Goto Control Panel -> Sound. In the Playback tab, do you see anything else other than your default Speakers?

I haven't tried playing audio thru my X220T, but in other laptops I had, I had to goto this menu to set the TV as the default playing device to hear the audio.

Look for an option called 'overscan' (or something similar depending on the brand of your TV) Turning it off solved this problem on my Panasonic 42" plasma

When I say an "old" plasma TV, I'm talking about a Dell TV from about 2004... I don't think that there's any "overscan" option but will review that.

Actually, I didn't have any problems when I connected my Samsung Series 9 to it through HDMI. It just worked at 1920x1080 resolution. It may be something to do with having to go through DP converter...

Check the overscan settings in the display driver as well. I had a desktop with an ATI Radeon 4350HD, and tweaking some of the overscan settings in AMD's Catalyst Control Center fixed it (Sony LCD rear-projection TV from around that time too).

The first display port to hdmi adapter I bought didn't pass audio with my X220, but the second one from monoprice did.

EDIT: Be careful buying from amazon.com. Different dealers sell different things, but use the same stock photo. That's what happened to me the first time. Followed a link to amazon.com on this forum for an adapter that was claimed to work.

i'm using the T420s and audio works well with my display port to hdmi cable.

But as the others have said before, it might depend on the cable itself.

Maybe you can try buying another cable which allows for returning.
