What are some good ways to get discounts on Thinkpads? The one I used to use is now gone
-
Barnes and Noble Gold (google) is the best way usually.
-
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
But even that discount can often range from very good to mehhh.
You can also try camping the Outlet; occasionally they have really good deals there, but those obviously seem to go really fast. -
Is this discount available to everyone, or is it for academia only, as the page seems to imply?

Works for everyone. I also combined the 10% email promotion as well as some on-the-phone haggling for my W520 when I bought it (total: 25% off, or a few pennies over $500).

They're in my sig
i7-2720QM
1080p
Quadro 2000M
4GB RAM (I upgraded later)
500GB HDD (ditto)
3yr TPP + onsite
Was $2167 on Lenovo's online configurator, and I haggled it down to $1665. -
I bought ThinkPad T530 for 1080 refurbished with following specs from outlet for 1080$ shipped.
IMO Don't go for new laptop , buy a refurbished one. ( it will save you some money and you get the better specs)
I really liked my new laptop.
