I have a T30, I recently compared it to a T42. The T42 has more give, and creaks way more (esp on the palm rest). The T30 seems WAY more "solid".

I never used a T30 enough to make an impression. My old laptop was a 13" 600E, and my 15" T43 definitely creaks and flexes more than the 600E did. Of course, it is thinner and larger than the 600E was, So this is not completely unexpected. The other thinkpad I have decent experience with is a 14" T20, and I don't remember thinking it creaked more than my 600E, so it is possible the earlier T-series were a little stiffer.

I saw a T23 recently. It was pretty creaky, but its getting kind of old.

One thing for sure is that the screens have improved

Whenever I think of the older thinkpads the only thing that comes to mind are the ancient models at the forest service that were recently replaced with dell latitudes. They seemed overly flexible, and the screens didn't seem to have any bracing to prevent screen flex.
My friend also has a pretty old p3 based thinkpad that a fat chick sat on in his car and broke the entire display. lol. Not sure about overall quality, but ****.. it should have sunk into the seat and not imploded upon itself.. hahahaha -
My T43 creeks too much on the palm rest. I often threaten to abandon my T43 and my T43 never talks back when I verbally and physically abuse it. I like it, it works for me.

My friend has an old 300mhz Thinkpad and it busted a hinge... I think it was dropped or something... but, he just screwed on a cabinet hinge from Home Depot and the laptop is still going strong with him every day back and forth from college. -
true, the newer screens are better supported, and Flexview is far ahead of anything around then.

(And I can talk to your T43 because I can talk to computers, and its true.)
Did the quality of IBM laptops go down ? (T30 vs T43)
