Remember it used to weight at about 4.5 lbs for T40, now that I check T61 and it weights 5 lbs with 4 cells. Mmm, what's going on here? Is this why the R series are getting more popular these days?

My opinion on the weight increase of the ThinkPad series is due to the way Lenovo is targeting their customers. They want to bring the ThinkPad name to more mainstream consumers as well as keeping their business base.

The R series is getting more popular these days because in the past, there was a clear cut difference between the R series and the T series. There are only small differences between the two series now such as a slight weight/size difference and 15" rollcage options to name a couple.

Well, I was thinking of selling my Hp DV2000 and get a T61. Now I am not too sure...I won't be saving any weight if I opt for the 6 cell and weight is actually one of the area I thought DV2000 could improve on.

Btw, what's smart card and what's media card? Is media card = SD, CF, Memory stick? Then what's smart card?

No outrage over the increased weight? Or you guys already passed that stage? I think this would have sparked a revolution among thinkpad fans if it were three years ago. Oh well...I was expecting a more lively discussion on this topic since this used to be the prime differentiation between T and R series.

how about just answering me what the smart card is? Heard of the term before, never really get what it is.

A smart card looks like a credit card with a small chip on it. If you don't know what it is, you don't need it.

They are common in satellite receivers and security applications.

Also, If I had to guess, I would bet that some of the additional weight is due to the battery. Just because they are both 4 or 6 cells, doesn't necessarily mean they have the same amp hour ratings. ;)
