I am desperate of buying a 7658CTO Thinkpad T61 IN UNITED STATES. I live in Norway, and the choice of Thinkpads we get here sucks. I don't mind waiting instead, but since i would be spending well over a thousand dollars on a piece of equipment, i would rather have it down to my specs. On lenovo's USA site, i put together a 7658CTO machine i want, and i can see that I would be in fact ordering from lenovo directly.

The problem is I don't live in the States.

Is there anything one can do? I will be importing the machine later on to Norway, and I am aware of the import tax etc. The thing is I end up paying slightly less for my configuration anyway (which is exactly the one what i want) than paying for nearly-the-same config domestically thru a reseller here. Like I said, the choice in Norway currently sucks.

    Tanks :)

Do you know anyone in the US? If you know someone that lives here - well enough you might convince them to let you borrow their address.

I think the bottom line is you have to have an address in the US. Doesn't matter if its yours, but as long as you can get the owner of that address to cooperate you should be fine.

Usually European prices are much higher (like 2x) than in USA. If you can get it in your country for almost same price, get it there! There is too much hassle getting it from USA, and you won't get an international warranty on T61.

Unfortunately, that's not enough. You must also have a credit card with US billing address :(

If you trust me, I'll receive it and ship it to you so long as you pay shipping.

Yurop. I don't know, I just thought that was funny. That's how it should be spelled.

If you have family in the US, get them to buy it for you and ship it, then reimburse them once you get it LOL.

I think the guy is making fun of us. His perfectly-american English - they don't speak like that in Europe - and then "Yurop" and "Tanks" to make us believe.

For real? I've never tried, but yeah. Thats usually how they verify your address. Doh!

Sounds like something you can set up on craigslist, if you don't have any relatives/friends in the US. I bet some college student would do it for $100, as long as they have a big enough credit card.

Guys, sorry for disturbing your ever so important discussions about god(s), i just dropped by (its 4am here and i should be in bed) to reply...

I know noone well enough to bother with involving them in my daring purchase of a T61.

My billing address is naturally Norwegian. If what you say is true, then its totally bad news, and it makes bad situation even worse :(

SiriusGTO, i am considering your offer, given my lack of options and big desire for a customized T61 vs our puny choice here... I ll pay the shipping and you pay the laptop, did I understand correct? :) No, seriously lemme think. I am willing to go quite far as a matter of fact.

What is international warranty? Does this mean, i would need to ship it back to states whenever something happens to it? Does it effectively mean NO warranty if i have it here in Norway?

P.S. I am Armenian, and i know how to spell Europe. Like this - Y-u-r-o-p ;)

Not to imply I'm a conservative nutjob. I'm a liberal independent thank you.. Dealing with international laws and restrictions is what gives me headaches. It's a good thing I'm not in foreign relations.

Why not send an email to the local authorized distributor and ask them when the T61 will arrive in your country?

Buying fr overseas is not ideal.

Firstly, they local resellers dont even answer my emails. I ve sent three so far. I get the feeling whole Norway is all about lame plastic laptops for consumers, the truth is the perfectionist minority like me will never be the focus of any resellers or manufacturers attention. This is what is happening to Lenovo as well in fact, you can see how they are going away from the perfection towards what nowadays is called user-friendliness and what i call sellout. To the majority of amateur users.

I don't want to spend 1500$ getting a machine which is ALMOST what i require. This is not how things should be. For this reason i am WILLING to buy it from States, CTO (Customized To Order). It seems indeed to be the BEST option given my situation.

This is no joke. I am Armenian, and the spelling was just for fun. I am not illegal either. If you want to take this off-topic, please do :) I will stick to the important things.

Thanks for the tips guys. I googled 'craiglist' and couldnt filter out what is it that should be? Some student organisation?

SImon gift card, what is that ? :)

    Where is friggin Glendale? :)

Is all true :) And the saddest part of it, Norway + Thinkpads = Disaster. How come they build CTOs over there, and here they offer specific models, most of which what they call "TopSeller"'s.

I'm a Venezuelan w/Icelandic permanent residence. I ordered a T61 over Lenovo's website using an american card & address. Once the system arrives I will pick it up myself to take it with me to Venezuela. I could also have it shipped by FedEx or something in which case I'd have to pay both import taxes and VAT to be able to get the machine.
Venezuelan reps confirmed me that US warranty is fully accepted in services centers so not a problem on that side either.
