Dear all, I just received a new crucial 204 pin SODIMM DDR3 4 GB and I added this to my previous 2 GB on my T400. As soon as I power on my PC it starts beeping, the computer does not turn on and the new memory module gets very hot

Any suggestion about what is happening or how I can solve this problem?

    Thank you.

Swap slots and see what happens. I hope you are not standing on carpet etc. Could have shorted it.

I swapped them and did not work. What do you mean by standing on carpet etc?

    Thanks for your quick reply.

When you were installing it, static electricity built up from the carpet might have moved from you to the ram, shocking it and rendering it broken. The beeps (probably) indicate the memory has a error, check your manual for full description of the beeps. Make sure you installed them properly. Does the computer still work with only the original ram? If so, it's probably shortcirculted.

Yes, the computer still work but only with the original ram. Do you think that the overheating of the ram is caused by the fact that is damaged?

Yeah most likely. It could be that it's DOA. Would it be possible to try it in other laptops?

If you got a heavy rug, I think you damaged the memory. Why do you think it comes in an electrostatic bag? Install RAM and work on computer in kitchen or even bathroom or garage. Also use wristrap. BTW I wouldnt put that thing back in or you might fry your slot.

Using the original RAM swap slots. If no heat, then don't worry. But you should return the new RAM memory (even though you probably damaged it). lol

(Without assigning blame,) Yes, it sounds like bad RAM. Try an exchange.

    Try a single stick only.

Double check the specs of the RAM is correct for your notebook

Did you match the RAM timing and speeds with your original stick? If your smaller stick is spec'ed to run higher and it's in the first slot, the T400 might be trying to run the 4GB stick at a higher speed than it's rated. Stick the 4GB stick in only in the first slot and see if it runs.
