That's a USB Port Replicator, you can buy one for any notebook.

    Now let's make something clear:

DVI-D, HDMI and DisplayPort are digital interfaces, also the last two could carry audio as well. The links you posted are to DVI-A to VGA which are both analog interfaces.

As you may guess, there is a difference in image and color quality between analog and digital signal.

The W500 has a DisplayPort and the ThinkVision L220X has a DVI- D, both are digital interfaces and they are compatible so you could use the adapter I posted above.

Your monitor doesn't even have a DVI- A interface so I'm not sure what you are doing with those analog adapters. If you want to connect it to the X300, then simply use a VGA cable, the monitor has a VGA port as well.

great details Dreamer, thank you very much.

i'll buy the adapter you posted for the W500 to carry audio and video and connect the X300

i think its time to read more about DisplayPort on wikipedia :)

Just for the record the X300 can do 1680 x 1050 on its own to a monitor. It might be able to do more but thats the highest my 22' monitor will go.

I bought this converter couple of months ago and working just fine till two days ago ubuntu upgraded itself and it stopped working for some reason

during boot it works just fine whenever it comes to X it doesn't display anything and even FN + F7 (im using thinkpad W500) it doesn't switch

i think the problem is with FN + F7 that switch between screens because even the normal VGA cable of the monitor when i connect it and hit FN+F7 it doesn't switch between screens like it used todo (before the auto-upgrade)

    any advise?

    Thank you.

i have no idea if this works, but my shuttle HTPC has an HDMI out converter that plugs into my DVI monitor. i know that the x300 has an HDMI out. Has anybody tried an HDMI->DVI converter cable?
