Finally got my Thinkpad yesterday and I got through re-formatting. I'm wondering if there is any firmware available for the HLDS GSA-U10N DVD burner? It's currently using the drivers automatically installed by Vista.
I need the firmware to be able to change the booktype setting for DVD+R DL discs, which I cannot do with the installed firmware.

I think you have drivers and firmware confused. They are not the same thing. Firmware is embedded in the DVD burner itself. It has to be "flashed" to change/upgrade it. Sort of like flashing the BIOS on the motherboard. The firmware can determine booktype, but ordinarily it doesn't change it.
What you need is a DVD burning program such as imgburn (free from imgburn.com) if you look on the bottom right hand side of the application window you will see a little icon that looks like a book. If you click that it will show you what booktypes you DVD burner is capable of and you can select from that list. This is a burning program only. It does not rip.
I think you can select booktypes from within Nero as well. Also, some DVD burner manufacturers have applications that come with the DVD burner that will allow booktype changing. However, since this came as OEM on a thinkpad I doubt there is special software available specifically for this drive. -
Most drives either support it or don't. You usually get bitsetting on a notebook drive only for DL media.

I don't have it confused. I downloaded IMGBURN and tried to change the booktype and it wouldn't let me change the bitsetting for DVD+R DL discs. I need to change DVD+R DL bitsetting to DVD-ROM so my Xbox 360 burns work. The firmware that's currently installed doesn't allow me to change the booktype. I'm sure the burner supports it because my 3 year old Dell and my 2 year old Acer both support changing the booktype.
The Dell only supported it when you updated the firmware. I'm sure that if there was an official firmware update, it would support changing booktype but I cannot find anything about it on LG, Hitachi's or Lenovo's site. -
impactplayer is correct
you can change the bitsetting default to show up as dvd silver (real) instead of -r or +r
this can be done in a software program like nero or alcohol, but it's best to do in the firmware, as then it'll work in any OS with any burning software.
i've done it to a few of my drives, but you have to find a modded firmware and flash it
it's likely uncommon on laptop dvd drivers
