Hi, Im new to laptops and have a few questions especially about the Lenovos. Would appreciuate any help with my querries.
1. I would very much like to buy a T60 but I can not seem to configure one from scratch on the Lenovo.com website(in order to bring the $2999 down). U only get the oprion of configuring the T43 notebook. My questions is: seeing as the notebook(T60) is relatively new, how long does Lenovo usually wait until allowing the customer to customize they're new models? Anybody know from past such cases?
2. I have previously read here that IBM gives some kind of discount for students and people working in the education system. Does anybody know whether this is only in the US or do all they're websites offer the same deal? In August ill be going to Japan for at least a year to teach there and so it would be nice to take advantage of this discount.
In case u are wondering, the customizing I would like would involve the
2GHz or higher processor,
15" screen
base RAM( I can upgrade it myself)
64 MB Ati card(unless it is not possible to upgrade it myself) then the 256MB
I don't care about the 3 year warranty so i would go with the 1 year
Windows ME if option given( I already own XP Proffesional and Media center)
-XP Proffesional seems to be $30-40 more and dont see why i would pay for it again
alos don't need the Verizon thingy( i suspect however that this would not be included on the japanese version anyhow)

I can't help you with Q#1, but have you looked to see if there's a model on this page that meets your needs?
http://www-131.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/s...000001&catalogId=-840&langId=-1&re=tptevp_tab
As for the education discount, I think those are normally given through a school. You also might be able to buy through the eduction site on lenovo.com. Check here: http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/education/index.html
No such thing as Win ME any longer, but you should be able to get XP Home. Have you tried calling? The telephone sales guys can sell any model made, while the website always seems to have a subset of configs.
Good luck. -
Thnks for answering Nooorm.
I actually ment to say Win XP Home not Win Me. U cannot downgrade on the T60 models in order to save money however.
Dont really like any of their pre-configured models, since I end up overpaying for the extra ram and a bunch of other things I dont really want. Hopefully by August they'll allow people to customize they're own T60.
As for the education thing, I did look at that part of the site but since Im not currently a teacher, it doesnt really help me.
Anybody know how much of a discount is given to teachers? -
apparently the qualifications to order from the educational section are rather loose, the fact that you will be a teacher is probably enough to get you through if they even ask.
I would imagine they brought out the mid- to upper-configured models first, and will fill in the base more later.
video card is not upgradable, so get whatever you want to keep. 512 is probably base RAM. -
I certainly hope they allow customizing of the T60....
My ideal setup is:
1.66 Ghz core duo (or 1.83 depends on my budget at the time)
14.1" screen
80GB 5400 rpm SATA HD
ram- doesn't really matter because I will purchase some seperately from newegg...
ATi X1400
DVD burner
intel 3945 wireless card
finger print reader
and all for $1800 or under....unfortunately, there is no pre-configured model that fits those requirements, and I know that if I could customize it on my own I could get it under $1800 with most if not all of those features....
And a T60 would be great for school because of the quality of thinkpads, and the Cisco compatibility, and I will be taking classes to get my CCNA certification... -
Lenovo has been running a lot more sales than IBM did. Keep checking their site every week and they'll probably have T60s on sale soon.

cvec7: Thats wahat I want to do, be able to customize my own and bring the price down. Epecially with things I can update myself(like memory). I am just undecided between a 15" and a 14.1" screen.
Nooorm: Actually they already brought down the price for their top model(sorry cant be bothered to look for the specific number), but it was the T60p $2999 model. It is now $2749. By Agust/September when I plan to buy mine, hopefully prices will be even less. -
Yay! you can now customize... http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/thinkpad/tseries_byo.html?&ca=lmbitpt&me=W&met=inli&re=tptevp
