    Start building the highest priced one and downgrade the specs you don't need that much off (i.e. 4gb RAM instead of 8gb RAM).

    Got the best deal out of a W510 that way. :D

    Most of the time you can't downgrade the spec.

    No...I think he meant opt for the highest specs and then reality cuts in which leads you to prioritize what exactly you need.

    Good advice, but in my case rarely works. If I have the cash and the machine is spec'ed out, I'll buy it nevermind the fact that I may have to eat catfood (or macaroni and cheese, which is approximately the same thing!) for the following few months!
