Hi
Are the new X220 IPS screens better than the older ones, as far as ghosting is concerned, or is it more of the same?
(Thank You)
-
I think it's improved with the new FRU parts. However I haven't bothered to replace mine as I don't do heavy Photoshop-like stuff on it.
-
Not really sure how you expect it to be better when they're still from the same source.
-
How do you tell which FRU you have? I need to send my brand new X220 tablet back because of a group of bright pixels and suction marks behind the glass.
I'd hate to go from the newer screen (Nov 2011 manufacture date) to an older, refurbished screen...but it doesn't seem I have a choice... -
Not to downplay others concerns, but I think the ghosting issue is way overblown. I think it's one of things if you go looking for it, you can find it, but in the six months I've had my X220i, I've never seen it.
-
It might only affect a selected number of the panel, while the new panel have a stricter quality control because of all the complain that people posted on the web.
-
My X220 was purchased two months ago in September and my screen is great.
I was concerned myself after reading all of the stories relating to screen and general quality issues.
I'm happy to report that I have no dead/bright pixels or bleeding at all.
I'm very happy with my system particularly the IPS panel. -
the physical design was updated to mitigate image retention. some panels still do it if pushed hard enough, requiring 30+ minutes of the same image. other panels, like my current one, won't show image retention no matter how hard i try.
fwiw, i've tested all three variations of this panel. photo 1 / photo 2 -
hum.... iMac 27 inch used IPS that had ghosting problems and they are eliminated in the second generation. LG is the manufacturer of these IPS LCD

Having built a desktop computer to do my heavy-lifting computing chores, I'm trying to choose between an x120e and an x220 for my light chores, as well as well trying to choose between the non-IPS and a non-IPS screen on the x220.

I'm sorry Eric, but I disagree as the Windows taskbar usually shows during normal usage, and computer users do toggle between full-screen and non-full screen in applications while using MS Windows. Writers lament over paragraphs. Photoshop users toggle pallets on and off. People frequently use an application, and then switch them to check the email, or do instant messaging.
Lead_Org, I don't quite understand how Apple is relevant as we were discussing Lenovo displays. -

My X220 has one of the older IPS screens. I have never found any problem with ghosting or light bleed - and believe me I have looked hard for it.

If you want a X220 and the 12.5" IPS screen, you should go for it. Before you do, I would also advise reading some of the other threads at X Series ThinkPad Laptops - Lenovo Community -
@Thors.Hammer
I don't need to see anything negative about the X220 IPS screen right now -- I'm waiting for my X220 to arrive after trying to find an ultra light weight notebook, that does all I want it to do, for months. -
It looks like the new panels are solid based on that thread.

I received my X220 today, when I boot to windows I noticed some light leakage from the lower left corner of the screen, does it mean the current IPS screen still has problems?
update: I just checked the screen in a full screen youtube video, I don't notice any light leakage anymore, so strange. But it is definitely present on the windows 7 boot logo screen. -
Perhaps its Win7 boot artwork?
-
since the boot process is at 100% brightness and the boot screen is completely black, this exacerbates the backlight effect.
-
ic, as a update, i pinched the lower left corner of the LCD panel a bit and it seems the leaked light has reduced somewhat.
